Smokin’ Hot
The autocross, burnout contest and speedway fun runs drew big crowds
By Steve Turner

While the massive Meet ’N Greet kicked off the official events in style, Mustang Week really hit its stride yesterday at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Attendees and vendors filled the circle track to take advantage of some fast driving in a safe and legal environment capped off by some copious displays of tire smoke during the SVTPerformance burnout contest.

Throughout the day, Mustang Week attendees were able to take advantage of both an autocross course and fun runs on the oval track. The latter proved more popular, as there was always a huge line of cars waiting to tear around the oval, but the autocross had a steady stream of cars as well.

Aside from the participatory events, the oval track was occasionally closed down so Formula Drift stars Vaughn Gittin Jr. and Justin Pawlak could wow the crowd with their car control and tire-shredding abilities.

The drifting demonstrations set the stage nicely for the SVTP Burnout Contest, which closed out the event. It featured a stout lineup of tire slayers driving everything from a well-worn vintage ’Stang to a pair of Lightning pickups. We’ll have complete coverage of all the tire-destroying action in the near future, but it was Khion Kittler who took the win in his 5.4-liter 1996 Mustang.

Today the official action splits up with fun runs and autocrossing returning to Myrtle Beach Speedway and quarter-mile racers heading out to Darlington Dragway for drag night. Either way you are going to need a hearty breakfast to carry you through another day of activities, so why not join us at the first annual SVTOA Breakfast at the Beach at the House of Blues this morning.

SVTP sold a ton of its popular “I Survived Mustang Week” shirts at the speedway, so if you want one of these you better hit our display early at the show on Friday. While you are there you can pick up a wristband for Ready To Rock Night, which is a party you don’t want to miss.

Obviously the Fun Runs are a blast for the drivers, but they also provide Mustang fans the chance to see a variety of Mustangs driven in anger. It makes for a great display of sights and sounds. Of course, there’s nothing quite like hearing a Flat-Plane Crank Voodoo 5.2 revving to the moon on the track.

Vaughn Gittin Jr. returned to Mustang Week to show of his new demonstration car. He put on the kind of smoke show we have come to expect and gave rides to a few lucky contest winners while wowing the crowd.

Joining the drift-demo party this year was another Formula Drift Ford driver, Justin Pawlak and his Roush Mustang. JTP put on quite a smoke show of his own.

BFGoodrich’s Are You Driver Enough contest turned into an autocross battle of brothers to determine who would win a trip to this year’s SEMA show. In the end, Tim Schoch (left) edged his brother Ron (28.72 vs. 28.83) to win the trip to Sin City.

Palmetto Ford showed off the two new Mustang Week Editions designed by Mustang Week’s Mike Clay and wrapped by Bullitt Auto Detail. Tony Barron of Palmetto Ford said both cars already had offers in to buy them.

Khion Kittler swapped a junkyard Navigator 5.4 into a ’96 Mustang. He used that combo and an aggressive driving style to eviscerate both rear tires on the car and take the SVTP Burnout Contest win.

Khion won a set of new drag radials but he considered the remains of his tire a true first-place trophy, so he held it up proudly while accepting his prize from our own SID297. Stay tuned for full coverage of the SVTP Burnout Contest.
