I did some searching and found some similar questions from a long time ago, but not really any confirmation of something that fits/works. I want to eliminate the ugly plastic tube covering the valve cover on the entire LH side for the inlet of my P1SC on my 2013 GT. I see mushroom foam filters, or low profile filters, and there's a post on here of someone that routed the inlet down into the wheel well using really tight radius tubing. Is there anyone running 11psi of boost or more with their P1 using this type of filter? Would something like this work mounted right onto the head unit providing it fits? 8162 Spectre Conical Filter I also know there is a race screen that ATI sells (ATI AF059I-001 Air Filter A7600 RAW AS MB) , but while my car's not a DD, I do want to filter dirt etc as it will be driven around town maybe 3k miles a year or so. Any other ideas or pictures of setups? Thanks!
If I recall correctly the mushroom filters like that are a pretty big restriction. What you're referring to is usually called a power pipe to put it the filter down in the fender. Im not up to date on your model year, Anderson made kits for prior cars. On new edge cars and such Ive also seen people use just a cured section of pipe connected to the blower with a rubber elbow and then putting a conical filter still in the engine bay - kind of a compromise between the stock plastic inlet and power pipe down into the fender
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I was thinking the mushroom foam style filter probably is a decent restriction, but do you think that one from spectre that I linked would be much of a restriction? yes I do, I think if you saw it in person and compared the square inches of filter media it would be a decent amount less..could be wrong though
I guess I was thinking in terms of the area of the inlet hole into the head unit, and how it's much smaller still than the surface area of the filter media (of the spectre) so I was thinking it would be negligible. What do you think of the race unit from ATI - just the screen? This doesn't filter dirt or dust of course, but it's pretty close to being wide open to the head unit inlet, so it shouldn't restrict much at all, right? Thanks for the reply. I saw these and was wondering if the sponge material might disintegrate though, and bits of it end up in the supercharger? I read one post somewhere that stated it's maybe an issue. I was also wondering how well they really flow. I'd love to verify someone running this with my setup who's maybe had it on the dyno etc. Wishful thinking! I may be the guinea pig as I'll be doing a dyno tune on my whole new engine in a month or so!
I wonder how bad it would be to run with the ATI race one... (just the mesh screen). That's tempting as I don't put a ton of miles on and will be changing the oil very regularly. I have an old HP twin turbo kit on my '97 Cobra. This kit places the turbos low and right behind the front bumper cover. I replaced the K&N filters (provided in the kit) with the HKS Super Power Flow filters. This was about 11 years ago. I haven't had a problem with the filters coming apart or disintegrating. My car was dyno tuned with the filters in place and put down 880/793 @23 psi, on a Dynojet. I have not bothered to do a comparison between having the filters in place and with them removed, as I will only drive the car with the filters on. While I think one of these would work well for you, I would suggest that it would be better to utilize some piping and place the filter outside of the engine bay.
Thanks for the reply, it's great to hear a good report on the HKS superflow foam one. Just out of curiosity, since it worked so well for you, why would you not recommend it? It would seem like a great option, no? The only way for me to run piping is to make a really tight radius 180° bend which is not optimal anyway. This is a link to a post where someone made the piping to go down into the fender well. But it required cutting some metal and was interfering with the headlight it sounds like. I think it comes down to the lesser of two evils. I would rather have a few radiused bends in my intake to draw ambient air than no bends and heated underhood air. You could still use the HKS on the end of the piping. How much does it matter? Well.....if it reduces or eliminates the pulling of timing, then it matters a great deal. Even on a weekend toy, I would not use a screen.
Yeah.. I'm not worried about the IAT as there are dozens of threads on here that prove it's really a perceived issue, not a real performance issue / limitation. The few degrees difference of IAT is insignificant compared to the heat in the compressed air charge on a FI car. I know what you mean though that in theory, especially on a NA car, it should matter. Shaun @ AED had some posts many years ago testing the setup and has the opinion that the location is not a limitation at all. I just hate the look of it, and I also hate that it blocks everything in that whole area, including the damn dipstick. lol I'm already many months into a new engine build, and suspension upgrades / changing the K member etc. and I really want to get it going and just might start with the HKS one right on the head unit - just to get something going. I could always dyno test it in different locations later.
For that matter I could ask my shop to do a pass with the Spectre one as well, and draw some comparisons.
