Motorcraft FL-2051S vs FL-2124-S | A Really Good Filter Gets Upgraded
FL2051_V_FL2124_002.jpg

Last week we posted an article lamenting the cheapening of the Motorcraft oil filter spec’d for many Coyote and EcoBoost engines. Today we have much better news. Ford recently the Motorcraft FL-2124S oil filter for the 6.7L Powerstroke diesel engine. This filter supersedes the FL-2051S filter that debuted on the 6.7 PSD in the 2011 model year. I’m here to tell you that this new filter appears to be an upgrade over the already very good older design.

These two filters appear to be nearly identical save for one major difference, the filter media. The FL-2051S appears to use a synthetic media very similar in appearance to the Stratapore filter media found in certain versions of Cummins Fleetguard filters. It’s a well constructed and filter that overall is a very nice quality piece. However, due to Ford adding a variable volume oil pump to the 6.7 PSD and wishing to be able to run longer drain intervals the developed the Motorcraft FL-2124S oil filter. This inspection vid will give you an up-close look at the differences:

The 2124 filter swaps the Stratapore style media for a wire-mesh backed synthetic-glass media. This is the same style media that is found in many high-end boutique oil filters (think Amsoil and Royal Purple). Overall, I’d say this is a solid upgrade. I would not hesitate to use it if I were running a 6.7L Powerstroke. Check out the full specs of both filters:

Nice article, Travis. Nice to see POSITIVE improvements made by Ford, vs. cost-cutting changes that adversely affect overall quality and performance.

I suspect they made this change because they wanted the ability to run longer drain intervals, which I do not recommend.
When it first came out, the FL-2124S was intended for the 500hp 6.7L and the FL-2051S was for the non 500hp and legacy ones. Then the FL-2051S was made obsolete and replaced by the FL-2124S. I still have owners coming in complaining that the numbers don't match their owner's manual.

There also is a -B12 version like the 910S, 820S, 500S, and 2062A that are meant for shop use without retail boxes.
