I didn't notice any big difference between mortar 1 and mortar 2 as far as dropping it into the barrel. ??

By trying harder to put some force behind the drop on the 2 shot, he cocked the round a bit (allowing it drag on the side wall lip) and killed the speed of its drop. A live round hung in the tube is not a good time.

Yeah it looks like he pushed it down the tube more, instead of just letting it fall.
