Disappointing numbers. They ran (yawn) 14.792 @ 95.82. 1/8 mile was 9.608 @ 74.77. Part of the problem was the weight. The weighed it at 3940 lbs! (That was with two guys in it at 175 and 140 lbs, each). Sad, but the numbers make sense. Using the spec’d power of 300 hp and translating that to the rear wheels, that would be 255 rwhp (assuming a 15% loss). So power-to-weight ratio is only 255/3940 = 0.06472. Calculating ¼ mile trap speed from that, I get…

MPH = 234*(0.06472)^(1/3) = 93.95 mph

ET = 5.82*(0.06472)^(-1/3) = 14.49 sec

Take out one person and of course it’ll be a little quicker, but not much. (Take out the 140 lb guy and the calculated numbers go to 14.32 @ 95.09. The meas’d numbers scale to 14.61 @ 96.98).

This thing is heavy. 3940 lbs is 20 lbs more than my '03 Cobra weighs with my fat butt in it.

Those are the worst #'s I have seen by any mag. Even R&T got better acc #'s than that. A M5 weights about 3450 and an A5 about 3520. Dyno avg 265-275rwhp.

The avg guy are seeing 13.6-13.9 @ 97-101mph.
Best mag so far MT= 13.5 @ 103.6
Best stock so far Bryan= 13.35 @ 101.5 .

willy - yeah, I thought those numbers were pretty terrible, too (although they did jive w/ the power-to-weight ratio). I can't get over the weight...do you think this particular car was heavier for some reason? If you take out the two people in the car, it came out to 3625 lbs...142 lbs more than spec'd weight.

I was at US 131 Dragway the day they ran that 14.792 and I honestly expected a little better numbers. It was very hot that day and the driver made a little slower shifts but I still thought he made a fairly clean run for an average driver. Paul Svinicky of Pauls High Performance is a very skilled driver and ran a 13.9 at 101.58. It sounds like that electronic throttle control will need to be eliminated in a hurry on those cars.

I have yet to see an actual owner duplicate the incredible trap speed that Motortrend got. The highest I have seen is 101.x by an owner. Has anyone heard of an actual owner trapping in the 103.x range?

Hey guys, I'm still trying to figure out when/how the throttle control comes on in these '05 Mustangs. On that run, I thought I broke the car in First - it flat out died. I've got reports from other owners who only get that when the car is at opperating temps. You will see some outstanding numbers coming in MM&FF, so I have hope that not all '05 Mustangs are dogs like the one I drove.

i've noticed that if i make back to back runs my always has a dead spot on the next run. last time at the track i ran a 13.35 with a 1.87 sixty, then cut an even better 1.85 but only ran a 13.41. the car seemed to hit a wall in 3rd at about 5500 rpm , it feels really weird and it does it randomly. when it does this the car always about 1.5 mph less. any thoughts?

In the new 5.0 mag the driver said that he was shifting regularly (no powershifting) and taking it easy on the car. Hence the poor numbers.

Hi. I'm Dr. Jamie Meyer - the driver of the 05 in the new issue of 5.0 Mustang magazine. Powershifting, or lack there of, had very little to do with that car's bad performance. The throttle control kicked on immediately in first turning that stallion into a gelding. I thought I had busted the car ... Svinicki has told me flat out that he couldn't powershift his GT without the car "shutting off". Once that limitation is cleared up, or if you can keep it from activating, I think the car's performance is fine. Now, the weight, well that's another issue.

I just saw an 05 get on the dyno today, bone stock, about 1000 miles on the car and pull 275.. and it was a mustang dyno!!!

After a little tweaking and a tune, it went 298HP 320trq!

With the tune, the car shifted great and it was real crisp.. NO more falling flat on it's face after a shift..

Worse numbers I have seen in a mag (was actually driven by a indiependant shop) are 13.90 :bored: ...most of these numbers seem pretty underwhelming to me...

Yep - that was another super tune by Rick@Amazon - just the tune added another 23rwhp & 32rwtq - the customer is very, very, happy!

Anyone that has full read that article understands the low numbers... the guy that was driving had a high level Ford rep. in the car with him and he felt like he couldn't run it as hard as he normally does, especially in the launch. Plus, that was the first time this guy had ever sat in the new '05 GT, so it's understandable that his first few runs would be crappy.

There are guys over at StangNet running very low 13's... but, most of what I've seen of the 05 GT guys on StangNet appear to be that they are dickheads who are owning their very first Mustang... probably traded the Honda in.
