Mach-1 Mustang Returns for 2021 Model Year

DEARBORN, Mich., May 29, 2020 – With speed, style and a name that embodies both, Ford today announces the Mustang Mach 1 is roaring back to life this year, with its debut coming this spring.

The iconic fastback coupe that debuted during the first golden era of muscle cars in the late-1960s now returns for global Mustang enthusiasts looking for the epitome of naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 performance in a new golden age of power as a new choice in the lineup of the world’s best-selling sports car.

“Mach 1 has a special place in Mustang history, and it’s time for this special edition to claim the top spot in our 5.0-liter V8 performance lineup and reward our most hardcore Mustang enthusiasts who demand that next level of power, precision and collectability,” said Dave Pericak, director, Ford Icons. “Like the original, the all-new Mustang Mach 1 will be true to its heritage, delivering great looks and as the most track-capable 5.0-liter Mustang ever.”

Continuing the Legacy of Mach 1

Mach 1 debuted for the 1969 model year and immediately carved out its place in the Mustang lineup, delivering performance and improved dynamics with its GT handling suspension. In the years that followed, Mach 1 saw improved performance versus Mustang GT and was more attainable than Shelby and Boss variants.

“Mach 1 has always been that bridge between base Mustangs and the Shelby models,” said Ted Ryan, heritage brand manager, Ford Archives. “From a style and handling perspective, the original Mach 1 managed to stand out as unique, even in the Mustang lineup – and as the name implies, it could really move.”

Two years after its debut, Mach 1 with its competition suspension hit the streets in 1971 longer and larger than the original, with an assortment of powerful engine options. In 1974, Mach 1 again saw major changes, reimagined for the first time as a hatchback. This Mach 1 generation enjoyed a five-year run and beefed up its handling capabilities more with an optional Rallye Suspension Package.

Mach 1 returned for 2003 and 2004 model years, blending modern power with the nostalgia of 1970s-era Mach 1 design elements. Its unique Mach 1 handling suspension with larger Brembo front-disc brakes improved on-road performance, while its matte black spoiler and hood stripe helped the coupe standout.

Seventeen years later, the all-new 2021 Mustang Mach 1 is set to return as the most track-ready 5.0-liter Mustang ever, once again delivering design magic while adding to its performance legacy.

I will be watching to see what comes to fruition with this new Mach 1. Looks to be interesting thus far. Not to take away from the 5.0, but I would definitely like to see Ford do a NA 5.2(hint, hint Ford) Aluminator 5.2 xs crate engine anyone? All they’d have to do is drop one in off the Ford Racing catalog. 10spd auto option, and looks like those splined hubs on the front are still there. Use those?? Brakes look ample as do the 305/30r19 front cup tires. Also curious what the vdyn on the tire is denoting. Forged/flow formed rims? Ford has all the stuff to make a great package with this one, don’t let us down Ford!

I like it. Brakes look beefy. Just don’t tell me those are the wheels they’re putting on the car, yuk. Looks like the root system of a tree.

    I will take one :D

I thought they would do a 5.2, cross plane crank though. Interested to see the final specs.

so we got a track pack GT, a Bullitt, a GT350, GT350R, and GT500... exactly where does this fit into the lineup? if this thing doesn't have the DCT or something that puts it between a GT350 and GT500 it'll be a fail... problem is that it'll be priced like a Bullitt (i like the green color) which is stupid considering where cars were 10 years ago.. the only Mach 1 people cared about was the 03-04 because it was placed well in the mustang lineup..

I'd be happy with a bit more aggressive version of the PP2 suspension, with the Bullitt engine, backed up by the 350 trans.

That's a nice compromise, and keep the price under $50K.

Absolutely. I just hope they don't go nuts with the styling.

To be honest, I'd like to see a little more diversity in the line up. Not just another road course orientated car. A more powerful engine with a street/strip orientated suspension with the option for both a 10speed and 6 speed manual. Then maybe through in the suspension packages(magnaride, lowering springs, swaybars etc.) As an option. Was really looking forward to a 5.2 liter utilizing the latest gen 3 block with higher compression pistons. I dont know if that'll happen but I wont hold my breath.

I kind of like that they haven't tried to incorporate a shaker style hood intake. More closely resembles the Bullitt. That's not a bad thing, but, the '03-'04 Mach did stand out against the '03-'04 Cobras and GTs with that hood.

I personally want a shaker style hood and intake setup. Also want 500hp N/A with 450tq plus. But will see what ford does. I personally loved the 03/04 mach 1.

Personally, I'd rather see a 2021 Boss than a Mach 1. Especially if it is aimed at track performance. The Boss is synonymous with track prowess. The Mach 1, not so much.

It would be awesome if they brought back both(doubt it) have the boss as the road race car aka.pp3 and the mach 1 as the straight line car. Give them their distinctive exterior stripe packages and suspension components.

    Isn't that basically a GT350?

I just don’t like the ‘18 and newer Mustang front ends. The GT350 nailed the look of the S550, so any refresh has to beat this benchmark.
