Ok a buddy of mine picked up a bone stock 04 Mach 1. He just added a BBk off road x-pipe. After everything was together we noticed a slight tap/knock consistent with the engine lope. It only starts to tap/knock once the car gets a heated up. We threw her back on the lift and it appeared to be coming from the bellhousing. We dropped the tranny last night and noticed the pilot bearing was worn. So we changed the pilot bearing, throw bearing put a new Spec disk in and added an 03 Cobra aluminum flywheel that he had laying around. Got her all back together and she ran for a minute and we thought cool it was that pilot bearing! Well she started to tap again and we are back to square one. We have checked the X-pipe after installation and there is nothing loose on it! So we are just puzzled. We are pros at dropping the T-3650 and reinstalling it in NASCAR crew like times now! Any suggestions will be appreciated at this point!

If you are hearing a tapping noise coming from the bottom, sounds like a bearing to me. Did it run low on oil?

No it's definitely not coming from the bottom of the engine. I have spun a few bearings in my time. We put the car on the lift and ran her and the tap is defitnitely coming from the tranny bellhousing area that's why at this point we are stumped. The knock didn't start until we replaced the stock h pipe with the BBK off road x pipe. I think that is just a coinensdence though!

Throw out bearing retainer sleeve could be worn. Did yall change that and/or add grease to it?

Does the sound change/come about when the clutch is engaged vs being disengaged?

Since the sound started after the O/R pipe install start there. Off road pipes tend to let more noise roll thru, try putting the stock H pipe back on and see if you can still hear it.

That's the easy start.

Good point and we already have talked about doing that. The crazy thing that makes no sense is that this noise happens after the car warms up to it's normal operating temp. The only other thing he did was put an aluminum flywheel in from an 03 Cobra.

Not meaning to offend if you happen to be a person who is partial to BBK, but BBk makes shitty x-pipes. Chances are, that sound you are hearing is usual for the BBK and he should probably get used to it!

It is not a true X and its the raspiest X i have ever heard on a mustang..

+1 I've never seen or heard good things about anything BBK. UPR sounds better IMO and it cheap. But +1 on putting the stock H pipe back on and seeing if that's the problem, someone already said it but that was my first thought.

You can also have the "head tick". It typically happens on the 03-04 cobras with the added heat from the SC, but not to say it's not possible on a Mach. Friend of mine had a random ticking noise. Drained and changed the coolant and said it has gone away. You can also run a slightly heaver oil weight. In which case I believe it's your valve guides that have heated up and got worn out. FYI his ticked with a catted aftermarket H pipe.

But deff start with putting the stock H pipe back on. See what happens. If it is head tick you can narrow it down to the last cylinder on the drivers side near the firewall. Hence the reason it can travel down the firewall and apprear to be something transmission related.

Is this a noise that can be clearly captured on video?

Yeah I made a video the other night but we think we know what it is now. He put a new Magnaflow X-pipe on it tonight and it still made the sound. We believe it's being caused by the 03 Cobra aluminum flywheel that he installed. It sounds like it is hitting on something and he is going to drop the tranny again this weekend.

It's going to be the Aluminum flywheel IMO. That would explain the noise happening after the car heats up. The aluminum is expanding and it's rubbing against something. I am pretty sure we will see some wear marks on it when we get it a part.
