Loose rear axle nut

When I jacked up the car I noticed one rear wheel had significant slop in it. I was thinking wheel bearing but turns out the axle nut had loosened to ~50ft-lbs. I tightened it up and the slop disappeared, so I guess I caught it before I did any damage.

Since the nut is one time use, when it backs off to that degree should I replace it? It looks like Ford discontinued the original cage design and it's now just a nylock .... for peace of mind can I double nut it (i.e., torque the firs to 250ft-lbs, then torque another nut on it) or would that change the bearing pre-load?
