I'll throw my 2 cents in here. I have 4 motorcycles, been riding most of my life and still love it. I own a Harley Ultra with all the bags and goodies, a 2005 Harley V-rod Screaming Eagle, Triumph Tiger, and a Yamaha FJR. My riding consists of 95% local paved backroads, about 130 miles per ride. We sometimes run dirt roads which is why I have the Triumph. I am 6' tall and weigh 200lbs. What you will find out is a motorcycle choice is very much a personal preference and will probably change with time. As already mentioned, go for test rides, most are quality products but will handle very differently and ergonomics will be a big factor in your choice. What is comfortable for me my not be for you. When I first started riding I didn't want or need a windscreen but soon found that I preferred one. My FJR has an electric up and down screen and it does get used. Windscreens can buffet your head depending on how tall you are. I also didn't care if I had cruise but don't want to be without it now even for short trips. Buy used and save a ton of money. Most people will add options that you may enjoy and they do not get to charge for them. For example my 2005 V-Rod cost over 35k new and I would sell it today for 9k with 5k miles on it and it is perfect. Not a good investment. If I had to have one motorcycle it would be my Triumph. It is fun on dirt roads and is very happy at 80mph on the hard road, straight or curvy. What ever you choose, be safe and have fun doing it.
