KINGBOLEN BM550 Battery Tester Review | SVTP Tool-Tech
Hi everyone. My name is Sid and I have a vehicle addiction problem. One of the effects of my ailment is that I have tons of random batteries laying around. I’m not talking about just regular car batteries either. I have everything from golf cart batteries, to power-sports batteries, to generator start batteries; all of which are in various state of decay. The question is always, just how hurt is it? Can it just be charged, or is it headed to that great lake bottom in the sky. I now have a tool to help me decide their fate.
I recently picked up a KINGBOLEN BM550 Battery Tester from Amazon. This thing is way more powerful than just a basic voltage tester, because testing a battery with a multi-meter can trick you. With the BM550 you input a few specs about the lead-acid battery you’re testing ( rated voltage and CCA) and it will tell you the read voltage, state of charge, state of health, and (most impotently) the internal resistance – all for around $20. Check it out:
If you’re like me, you keep your batteries on tenders when they are not in use and they tend to die in more difficult to detect ways. I have had batteries test out with perfect voltage than fail as soon as you put a load on it. This is typically due to corrosion of the plates, which often comes from age. This type of failure can lead to all kinds of weird behavior in electrical and mechanical systems that can be hard to nail down if you don’t know what to look for. A voltage reading from a multi-meter won’t easily tell you what you need to know, but this battery tester will. IMO, if you have a lot of equipment with batteries in your fleet this is a tool you should add to your collection.
