Hp limitations of the voodoo

With a lot more of us boosting these motors and whipple claiming the factory motor is good to 1000 crank hp. Let's have a discussion, who's added blowers what kind of power you're making and who all knows of engine failures due to too much to, not bad tuning.

I wonder what Whipple says what the hp level is on the stock motor with their blower running pump gas?

A better question is: Other than a few shops that have built FI conversion kits for the GT350, who here has actually done it? (any hands?). After that has been determined your question can be better answered by how many of those engines have granaded and at what hp level. With the expense of replacing this engine I don't think too many people are eager to find out.

Adding boost is something I have been considering for a while now. I think if I do i will have to change the oil pump gears first as that is the week link. I was quoted 12 hours of shop time to do this. So with that you have to add 2K to the price of any kit.

Twin turbo looks like the best way but all of the kits I have seen get rid of the catalytic converter which I need to pass emission in my state.

If i were to supercharge I would go with the whipple as it does not require the harmonic balancer to be removed and replaced or have a piggy back added like the procharger or vortech.

i read somewhere travis at boostworks talking about the block maybe being weaker than a coyote, ovaling or cracking with less power put to it than the coyotes he’s seen destroyed...i can’t find it now, and i don’t know him, but he sees some high horsepower builds from all kinds of forced induction. so you might ask him if you want some real world knowledge.

edit: i believe these were all like 850-900+ at the crank

What needs to be considered is the fact the GT350 engine is optimized for NA operation not FI. The 12:1 compression ratio plus the linerless block would stop me cold in my tracks unless I plan on running E85 or C16 which at that point starts to turn it into a race car rather than a road car. Keep in mind the risks to destroying the engine by supercharging increase by 600% which puts you 1 lean injector away from writing big checks. Keep the GT350 engine close to stock and it will deliver many years of trouble free operation you will be hard pressed gaining any substantial power increase over what Ford has delivered plus any resale appeal will be greatly diminished for a GT350 converted to FI. If you want a supercharged Mustang it's best to buy a Terminator or GT500 and start from there.

The linerless block is what scares me the most. I can't imagine buying a used one as any warpage within the bores will mirror the cost of a new one sleeving it which will weaken it further. Aluminum is much more prone to warping than iron or a sleeved aluminum block. I'm not even sure you can scratch hone a plasma transfer wire arc bore for new rings maybe some one can chime in here.

and i think that is exactly what he was getting at...the whole motor was trashed at that point.

i'd be lying though if i said i wouldn't love to have a blower on this really well sorted out car ...just haven't hit that point where my pocket book is willing to handle the repercussions

I didn't say "buy" a Hennessey. He's boosting the cars, so he should know what the limit is. You could call and ask.

HP doesnt kill cars, torque does. Put fat turbos on a car that dont make peak torque until 5000 vs a supercharger that puts big torque around 3500-4000, and even at the same peak HP levels the supercharger example is more stressed IN THIS EXAMPLE.

I'm not arguing supercharger vs turbo, i'm just saying that claiming a motor is good to X hp really is not an accurate statement. You need to know the torque, and the rpm for an accurate assessment.

I think heat by far plays the biggest role in engine failures it's almost always a factor many times it's the predominate one that leads to mechanical failure. An engine making a 1000 hp will require 4 times the energy as a 500 hp engine. That's a lot of heat.

This car made a lot of passes at the 1/2 mile event and still running strong. It ran 175 in the half mile which is right at redline in 5th gear. He made around 15 passes that weekend. Not to mention some trips out to the local drag strip since.
