How To Replace Fuel Filler Tube Gasket*pic's* - Mustang Forums at StangNet

for the past few weeks,i've noticed a strong fuel odor while driving.i checked all lines and injectors, which were fine.the problem was that the fuel filler tube gasket failed.this allowed fuel to leak past it and on to the outside of the tank, very close to the tailpipes:eek: ,not good.

i heard that i would have to drop the tank too replace the gasket, which is a pain in the a$$.

i found i did not have to  here are the steps to replace it.

-------------------------tool's needed----------------------
1-fuel filler neck gasket from Ford dealer $39.part #F4ZZ-9072-DA(much cheaper online, but i didnt want to pay shipping or wait for it to be delivered)
1- 3/8 ratchet.
1-8 mm,3/8 drive socket.
1-long 3/8 drive extension.
1-T15 Torx bit.
1-motor oil(just a little)
2-clean rags
1-floor jack
2-jack stands

#1.disconnect battery(just to be safe).
#2.raise car,set on jack stands.
#3.clean filler tube and area around filler tube gasket.
#4.remove right-rear wheel.
#5.follow pic's in order.

Love the write-up and used it for my install. Mine is a convertible, so it may make some difference (or not)??? I just wanted to add a couple of things...

1) I did not need to take the vent tube off of the plastic housing.

2) I also found that loosening the (2) tank strap bolts to within a couple of threads of coming out, slightly lowering tank, makes pulling the filler tube out and putting it back in much easier. I actually didn't loosen it during removal, but during re-installation I couldn't get the tube back in and I was afraid of tearing my new expensive gasket. Lowered the tank as I noted and it slipped in very easily.

Other than that, great job and thanks!!!

Great write up, came in handy. Took me about 30 minutes to swap the one out of my '98 Cobra. The part from the dealership was only $13.50 + sales tax, just as an FYI for folks ordering them online.
