This is going to be a How to on how to Modify stock SVT Center caps (03/04 Cobra) to Fit American Muscle replica wheels

First to show you the problem

You can see that the American Muscle ones are taller then the oem svt ones. ^^^
Next thing is to remove your svt top cap. It is just taped on to the actual cap.
I used a blow dryer to heat up the cap(tape/glue) and then pulled the cap off the base

(1)
You have Two options
Option 1:
Use a butter knife to split the two (if you do this do not place the knife all the way through, Just enough to pry off the cap (try not to mess up the tape on the cap. Keep the cap heated and it will slowly peel off with the tape on the svt cap part)
If you go this way skip to step 3

Option 2:
or just take whatever means necessary to get the cap off (if you choose this way you will need to do a bit more work)

Please note if you use something to pry the cap off with you may scratch the black area on the svt cap. If you happen to do don't worry. ^^^^

(2)
Next is to remove the glue/tape from the svt cap
I kept heating it up and pealing off a little at a time
Once most is off grab a piece of sand paper and rub till it is smooth (warning sanding too much will remove the black on the cap)

After you have removed and sanded smooth the glue/tape use black nail polish to fix any areas where the black has came off of the cap

(Not good)

(3)
Now you are ready to start modifying the American Muscle cap

Grab a sander and start sanding

The end goal is to sand it smooth to the black area on the American Muscle cap

Don't worry the center part will sand out

Clean it off real well and heat it up so it is dry

(4)
Skip to step 5 if you did option one in step one
After Grab some 3m double sided tape (any auto parts) and tape entire surface

IMG_20140122_211933_195_zpsvypnxxcr.jpg

Before you pull the other side of the tape off heat the tape/cap and press the tape to give it a good bound

Next pull the red off the tape.
Before applying the svt cap heat the tape up
Press the cap into the center of your wheel (without trying to finger it up)

(5)
Heat the svt cap tape/glue then apply if you did option one in step one

Grab your svt cap and apply (use a good amount of pressure)

IMG_20140122_212632_309_zpsxn62ntjy.jpg

Take the cap out of the wheel and keep pressure on it with something heavy

Here are some of the differences

Modified one is on the left oem SVT one is on the right

Good luck to all trying this. Just take your time and they should turn out like oem.
Hopefully this is a help to those running into this problem

Nice job man! This will be a useful thread for guys looking to sport the OEM styled caps on replica wheels. Thanks for showing all the details too. The job looks pretty simple, just may take some time.

I did mine I used a belt sander on the American caps and super glue instead of 3m tape.

I just realized the date on this thread. Did you not post a similar thread on SVTP about a year ago? If not, someone took the same approach of switching the center caps. However, I haven't been able to find the thread for the past 6months or so.

Nope not me

I'm surprised! Another member made a very similar post about a year ago, as I mentioned earlier. I'm glad you did this though, since I can use it to link other customers who may be interested in the same deal.

Nice work!

Some caps I did today for someone
I also polished and sealed them to get rid of most of the scratches

I did the same exact mod to my center caps. They wouldnt fit. Well, they would fit but would sink into the wheels cap area. Never fell out but jangled around. Did the same as OP did-- no problems and no weird Am caps.

Shane , I purchase 2 17 X 10.5 Chrome American Muscle Cobra wheels a couple months ago. The center caps have changed. Now there isn't enough material to do this modification. Does American Muscle have any of the older style center caps you could send me?
