Looking for some ideas on how to deter squirrels from my yard.

I'm having MAJOR issues with squirrels digging all over my rear yard and tearing up my newly planted grass.
There are areas that literally look plowed because they have dug it so much... At any given time there are 3-4 of the little shits running around back there.
I don't think my neighbors would appreciate me sitting out there with a .22 or paintball gun, and my wife would probably divorce me for it anyways...

Its a decent sized yard, so any repellant could get expensive.
Anyone had luck with fake owls or hawks?
I've seen trees with aluminum foil wrapped around the base. Not sure if that's for squirrels or bugs though.

Any ideas?

Newly planted grass...

Was your yard dead or did you do work/landscaping?

If it was dead or struggling you likely have a serious grub infestation. Squirrels eat grubs as well as nuts. Weak/dead/dying grass with barespots screams grub infestation. As the grass weakens the grubs come closer to the surface where eventually squirrels can easy dig them up. Moles are also a big sign of a grub problem.

Super easy to cure. Just use grub killer in fall and spring, should take care of it.
