so i've had my 2004 f-150 for 13 years now, and i am considering getting another engine for it. the engine runs fine but it has always had an annoying oil leak (that i tried to fix when i first got the truck but to no avail), so i'm considering getting a spare engine that i can go through and then install. just sort of as a fun project.

local junkyards have them, but they say i need to find an engine id code that ends in AA or AB. (such as 4S84-2-AA). i don't think they are talking about casting numbers on the block or heads.

i don't know if my engine is romeo or windsor. but it is a 4.6 2 valve sohc and the truck is 2wd.

can anyone shed some light on how i can identify? thanks

well as quick at that i think i have already found my answer lol. i looked in an old chilton's book i had for the f-150 and it said that the id number should be on a sticker attached to the driver's valve cover.

sure enough, mine shows the same number that the junkyard mentioned, 4S-842-AA. it also shows REP, which i'm pretty sure stands for romeo engine plant.

thanks anyway!
