Lately I've noticed a lot of these new rock groups destroying classic songs. Latest two terrible examples that make me want to ice pick my ear drums.

and...

How to do it correctly...

Used to listen to All That Remains a lot. Not so much anymore.
Felt like they should of added a heavier part in that song to add their own touch. Just same tone over and over.

Off the top of my head, covers that were done well, and not mentioned:

Johnny Cash, Hurt
Orgy, Blue Monday
Seether, Careless whisper
Nirvana, Lake of Fire(Live)
Manson, Personal Jesus
Killswitch Engage, Holy Diver

I am a Seether fan & a big Veruca Salt fan, but I do not like Seether's cover of Seether

There are a lot of cover bands out there that are bad. But, I have a lot I love that perform the song better than the original.

It's an art form with a fine edge. Taking too much or too little from the original can make or break it - especially if it's across major genres.

I did a cover 6 years ago and looking back, it was awful. I tried to turn a classic song into a shred piece and while it sounds cool, it was too much of a departure from the original and lost its essence.

The one that pisses me off the most is the that War Pigs cover that sounds almost identical to the original but they added annoying ass siren noises to it. IDK who sings it but they always play it on my local radio station for some reason

Much rather they try to honor without incorporating everything from the original, then again some songs just don’t transition well between genres I suppose. This was always one of my favs.

Disturbed knows how to cover a song well.

...but few bands cover songs as well as Deftones:

Duran Duran

Depeche Mode
