What is your idea of a performance car? 00JSVT, and others... Why do you believe it's a waste of money modding a SVT Contour? The car responds rather well to intake and exhaust mods, certain models do well with chips, and there's a adequate supply of suspension and wheel/tire mods. However, the most important reason to mod a car is to improve your relationship with your car and the road. This includes expanding the performance envelope, but more importantly, how the car looks, sounds, and feels as you're screaming down a country back road or twisting through the mountains. In that type of relationship, there is no better partner in crime for anywhere near the cost as the SVT Contour. Add in the fact that the SVT is practical, seating four in reasonable comfort, sneaks past insurance companies as a family sedan (pay $100 a month), and gets good gas mileage (I get 25 city 28 highway), you don't even have to compromise that. To answer the original question, I have 95,225 on my 1998 SVT, and I've had very few problems, and almost no squeaks and rattles. However, it is true that it is hit or miss, though 2000's seem to be more troublesome than earlier model years.
