bought mine with 31k, now have 40k and have to say i love it. there are miscelaneous squeeks/rattles and mileage has been less than impressive [LA traffic] but for the fun4dollar ratio we are talking here it is gonna be tough to beat.
so far zero problems, although i always keep one eye on the temp guage in case of h2o pump failure. They are suppose to be pretty crashworth too, not that i reccomend trying this out but somebody my try for you.

What is your idea of a performance car?

00JSVT, and others... Why do you believe it's a waste of money modding a SVT Contour? The car responds rather well to intake and exhaust mods, certain models do well with chips, and there's a adequate supply of suspension and wheel/tire mods.

However, the most important reason to mod a car is to improve your relationship with your car and the road. This includes expanding the performance envelope, but more importantly, how the car looks, sounds, and feels as you're screaming down a country back road or twisting through the mountains.

In that type of relationship, there is no better partner in crime for anywhere near the cost as the SVT Contour.

Add in the fact that the SVT is practical, seating four in reasonable comfort, sneaks past insurance companies as a family sedan (pay $100 a month), and gets good gas mileage (I get 25 city 28 highway), you don't even have to compromise that.

To answer the original question, I have 95,225 on my 1998 SVT, and I've had very few problems, and almost no squeaks and rattles. However, it is true that it is hit or miss, though 2000's seem to be more troublesome than earlier model years.

Why mod a SVT Contour?

You could, but I choose not to. I dont really understand the point. I modded my 95 MTX SHO that cost me around $4,000, and maybe brought me from a 15.0 to a 14.4-.3 For what? It simply was a waste of my time. I could put that $4,000 into a Cobra and bring it from a high 14 to a low 13.. Thats why I chose not to waste my money on my GOKart. Then forced induction? Another waste of time on this engine..im calling BULL****INGSHIT! if you think a S/C contour will run a 13! There goes another few grand. Thats why......just my decision of course.

Then again, most people run these cars on a track, where I like to drag it, thats where another conflict comes in.:D

I'll be the first to say that although I stoplight derby, and may do a dragstrip in the near future, tracks and winding roads are my idea of fun. I've done the straight line speed, and now going 120+ has a very blase "been there, done that" feel.

As far as a 1/4 in the 13's, I say it's believeable with the S/C, being at a dyno where one put out over 275 at the wheels (estimated crank hp = 335 using a ratio derived from stock SVT's), that's over 60% more power, and I think it could take 10% off a drag time.

I personally don't do it, because I need longevity from my car, and frankly, it's quick enough to make me happy and get me in trouble. Now if the current engine blows, I may upgrade to a 3.0 litre, but I'm happy with my car just the way he is.

Sure I dont doubt a 13 s/c SVT when its on the dyno, and tuned, a bunch. These guys bolting them on and then screaming 13's without even knowing, are wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy.......off.

well, jay,

let me see if I'm hearing you right, you think it is a waste of time to mod a car unless it will run 12s for less than $2k? Ok, I'm exaggerating, but if you carry out your logic, it is pointless to mod almost any car, even a Mustang or Cobra.

The entire point of modifying a car is to make it unique, to fit the owner better. If the main part of that (usually is) is to make more power, then great. If not, fine there too (though if someone's idea of this is to put tacky crap all over thier car, I reserve the right to insult them and thier car :D ) bottom line is, you shoulda kept the Cobra :D lol

honestly, I think a S/C'ed contour will make 13's easy, provided it is running correctly, etc. Mark's car, as I'm sure you know, is hitting 295 at the wheels, with pretty much just the kit bolted on (his plugs were gapped too big on the 275 run and he was getting spark blowout above 6k)
On 8/3 (next friday) some friend's will head out to Milan for a bit of a Contour SVT shootout, one S/C'ed car (Tim - nvmysvt) and one N2O car (Mark - Trapps) running the venom programmable nitrous setup (and you thought I was gonna say "Nahs" or NOS, lol) btw, that venom system is pretty trick, it'll do just about anything you want it too, and its easy to setup.

Jay, I guess the bottom line for the rest of the thread, is just because the Contour is not a torque monster, doesn't mean it isn't worthwile, I mean c'mon, Mark's car had a roughly 75% increase in horsepower from a poor supercharger setup!!! (I do have engineering issues with Vortech's kit) and it is in dire need of an intercooler. and if you want to shine on the dragstrip, the Contour is the wrong car (so is the SHO for that matter) go buy a Pinto and put a 460 in it, maybe you will be happy then :D

one more thing - Happy Birthday to me!
