Hey guys, I don't have all the details yet, but my brother picked up a 89 Bronco that needs a engine. My first thought was DSS, not sure about reputation? I know little about the broncos, but I'll get more information today. Hopefully he'll send me some pictures and I will post them.

Pushrod 5.0? Modular 4.6? SOHC? DOHC? Modular 5.0? 351? Rotary engine?

What engine is he looking for.

The 460 is not a bolt in. I think the entire cradle would need swapped with one from a 460 F250. Back in the day I considered putting a bigger motor in my anemic 94 F150 5.0 4x4 and that’s what I was told.

Does this Bronco have upgraded brakes? No sense in making it fast if it can’t stop.

I think a stroked 351 is the way to go. That would be a bolt in.

Good point on the brakes. 408w in my 73' CJ5 and if I run it out in fourth it makes you pucker.

Why not find another 302 and buy a used blower kit. I see them all the time for $1500-2000. Easy 400hp and the 302 will hold it no problem.

Tq is what you want. The 302 with the blower will give the hp but not the low end tq you want. Now a 347 could make up alot of tq but the 351w is just made for tq out of the gate.

You want 400-450tq thats really what the bronco needs mind you a 351w will easily achieve that goal.

Bingo, these heavy things need torque. I stand by my earlier statement, if you're doing a new engine there is zero reason not to use a 351W. Even a regular H/C/I 351 will be plenty. Throw on a full bassani exhaust with shorty headers and you're all set.

Is that bronco totally rust free? I wish mine was still that clean, I parked it over 2 years ago because the rust was getting pretty bad. It's probably coming time to do something with it soon, I think I'm going to pull the body off the frame.

The one I posted is a small block, 351W based.
