I got my swampfox liberty mounted yesterday. It is going back. The projected dot looks like a 30+ sloppy moa and it isnt even a circle. I should of turned it on last week when I got the dot on but I never thought it would be bad out the box. Oh well. I'll mail that off this weekend with the gcode holster I'm exchanging.

Buying a higher quality optic to me means there is less of a chance of failure, it doesn't rule it out. I've seen reports of higher tier brands failing even when its right out the box.

Anyway, this is just to see if i like a red dot. If so, i will try a good enclosed emitter type for carry.

Exactly.

“less of a chance”….

much MUCH less…

IMO. Close emitter is a bit over rated. Steiner, aimpoint and holosun make good enclosed emitter.

We do not know how much less of a chance. We do not have access to returns/failures that the manufacturers do.

I think enclose emitters are over rated until I need it and the emitter has trash in it making the dot useless. We get caught in the rain when we go to the back and hunt/shoot, so i can see it being an issue. But as usual, i will have to test the open emiiter to see.

We dont know “exactly“ how much of a chance but we can ball park it. As it is not really a metric that is close.

There is a reason why the RMR has been, for many many years, the gold standard in the industry. Not only in sports/hobby but combat/duty use.

The whole “trash clogging up the emitter” is a dull argument, that is unless you plan on mud wrestling while hunting.

You check your equipment prior to strapping it on / use, if there is something occluding the emitter. Rain, etc. Wipe it off. Just like you would when the glass on the closed emitter optic gets smeared with whatever.

There has never been an instance in the history of neverdome, where someone was not able to use their RMR because there was trash in it. Not in combat, not in anywhere.

But you knock yourself out, life is a rainbow, choose your color….

We check our equipment before we go out. We go out in the rain or it rains eventually. The dot has had water/crap on it. We can not see it clearly until it's wipped off. We have missed opportunities to take a shot in that time.

So you had water on the glass or the emitter? Because if on the glass, just wipe off (you will have to do the same on a closed emitter-wipe the glass) and if on emitter, just shake off / blow off and wipe off.

You will see that even with a close emitter, you will experience similar “issues”.

I know closed emitters are all the rage these days and every instagram influencer is pushing them but perhaps check this out…

After talking to my neighbors, I have about 125 acres of unpressured land on which to deer hunt. But had no decent rifle so...

My first modern sporting rifle.

Palmetto State .308 2020"
Pretty certain more changes to come.
One thing about hunting with an AR...many states have mag laws
For example in PA i cant hunt large game with any semiauto...however i can hunt coyotes and varmints with one but at first i was only allowed to have 5rd mags...now i can have any mag i want

The purpose of this law is to give those animals a chance to get their rifles out and get a round chambered, so they have a fighting chance.

I just went look through my vortex viper. It has a star burst as well now. Depending on how I look through my new swamp fox on a low brightness altering my focus, the Starburst becomes a tiny dot. I am going to schedule an eye Dr appointment.‍

Perusing through the Assault Weapons Ban of 2022 as passed by the House I noticed a short list of exempt weapons. Among the weapons listed were:

- M1 Carbines with standard fixed stock
- M1 Garand with fixed 8 round capacity and standard stock

I'm familiar and partial to the two listed above. I was surprised when I noticed the following:

- Ruger Mini-14 (w/o folding or telescoping stock or pistol grip)

The more I researched the Mini-14 the more I liked what I saw - it kind of slips by due to it not being considered a scary black rifle. It does have a history of reported inaccuracy but Ruger made changes to address that and I was really only interested in the latest version anyway. So I started looking, particularly for a stainless/wood stock version. I quickly noticed that they are silly expensive in comparison to an AR whereas they used to be a pretty good value. Being in NY, they meet the "doesn't have evil features" standard that you have to consider.

Anyway, I saw online that Cabela's has them. I punched in the zip for my local store and it said it had wood stocked versions but were "limited." So I drove there and spoke with a Cabela's employee behind the counter. He told me that they no longer sell a single semi-automatic rifle in NYS due to the confusion created by the Concealed Carry Improvement Act. Furthermore, I learned that NY requires an addendum to your pistol permit in order to be able to buy a semi rifle. Some counties in NY (as per two phone calls to the NYS Police hotline) require a CC permit to have serial numbers added and others don't record a semi rifle purchase but you must have a CC permit in order to buy a semi rifle in NYS now. Total cluster****.

So I visited my local Sheriff's office and had my permit updated via a small fee so I could then be allowed to purchase a gas operated rifle. After going through all this the vendors I had lined up to purchase from were sold out of wood stocked Mini's that met NY's requirements. Un****ingbelievable.

I found a vendor in MN of all places but with a synthetic stock instead of wood. I'll track down a stock, not worried about that. Just getting something in my hands before they pass even more laws was the goal here.

NYS absolutely sucks. No wonder why so many have left and more will in the future.

I love the firearm. It's like a combination of a Garand, an M1 Carbine, and an M14 all in one, albeit a in slightly smaller package.

Love my mini 14. At one time I had it decked out like this.but went back to the original wood stock and painted it ODG. I have multiple 30 rd magazines for it. Great shooting rifle.
