Back in 2016 I got a 2015 f150 with the 2.7 ecoboost. I loved the engine but after they been out for a few I have read of them having quite a few problems getting up in age. I got rid of mine with 43K miles on it and never had an issue. With that being said I believe this time I will give a 2015+ 5.0 f150 a try. Any problems you guys/gals had with them? I found a couple local for good prices with lower miles but I want to make sure its a good choice before I jump back in another one. Is there anything I should check for besides the obvious on used trucks?

The 15/16 F150 with the 5.0 were pretty solid. Even with miles on them they seem pretty reliable if taken care of. Seem them with 100k and no leaks.

As stated above the 17-19s seem to be using oil.

Have an 18 2.7 with zero issues. On the F150 forums the 2.7 has had the least amount of problems. I would love to a good sounding exhaust, but honestly that's the only downfall.

The 2.7 is the quickest of them all...according to many posts on the F150 forum. I have a 2015 2.7 with 55k miles, bought it new, I've changed the oil with Mobil 1 5 - 30 and a Ford filter 11 times...runs better than new. Oh...It's got a K & N drop in since almost new.

Got a '19 2.7 10-speed with a 93oct OTS tune from SCT. Just turned 16k this morning so not much time for issues to develop. The 10-speed is a love-hate for me, but that's a long story. In stock form, I was averaging 23.8-24mpg combined. I don't do any towing and the only hauling I do is the occasional trip to Lowe's or Home Depot so the 2.7 is sufficient. Unless I had plans to add forced induction, I wouldn't bother with the Coyote in an F150. I have nothing against the 5.0 by any means, but the 99.9% of us who use our trucks as daily A to B commuters are just fine with the Ecoboost motors. That's the whole point, after all.

It's not a drag monster, but I've surprised several people driving "normal" cars. Newer V6 Challenger, 6th gen V6 Camaro, Jetta with a front mount and a slew of A-pillar gauges... Nobody ever seems to want to do a dig either. 4-wheel launch with some boost behind it in sport and she boogies pretty well for what it is.

Our (purchased new in October of 2015) ‘15 5.0 has about 65,000 miles now.

It’s my wifes DD and as far as I know, we’ve had no motor/powertrain related issues. She’s averaging somewhere around 18.x mpg.

Other than regular fluid maintenance, all I’ve done was had the front rotors turned around 40k miles, and I replaced pads/rotors about 5K miles ago.

There’s also a reason the 3.5 is the “towing” motor. I haven't hauled or towed anything super substantial, but the 5.0 definitely needs rpms to tow.

I forget the year but I recall the gen3 coyote having issues in the eff Juan fiddy.

2018 iirc was the oil consumption year for the fiveoh. First year with the 10 speed

Not for sure if by 19 that issue was fixed.

The 18 thru 20's have the oil use issue.
.
Prior to buying, I would spend some time on ( www.f150forum.com ), a very active site with plenty of info..

I had a 2011 f150 5.0 that consumed about a quart every 2k miles. For me the oil consumption issue started earlier and seem to be more so as the years go by. In 2016 I opted for the 3.5 ecoboost and 60k miles later I have not had a single issue. I would buy the 3.5 again in a heartbeat over the 5.0 myself.

15/16 were good years for the 3.5L and 5.0. Remember they made improvements. The 3.5 got updated timing chain, guides, ect. 5.0 had improvements that started in 2013 for the oil consumption issues.

Everything changed when the 2017+ came out. Gen2/gen 3

New Truck with a WARRANTY. Trade truck in before power train WARRANTY runs out for new truck with a WARRANTY. This is the WAY. ;)

Thanks everyone. I must have misunderstood about the 3.5's in the 15+ having so many issues. If I do another ecoboost it will be the 3.5. Now I did love my 2.7 but just looking for other options with a little more pep for towing. Ill check out some 3.5's as well!

also agree on the warranty....the EB motors are VERY expensive, I believe the 5.0s are the same cost. No reason to spend 30 grand and not get a warranty.
