418-F052 or equivalent diagnostic tool

Principles of Operation

The following is list of GEM controlled functions:

  • 4-wheel drive functions

  • front and rear wiper/washer

  • warning chimes

  • keyless entry

  • interior and exterior lamps

  • power windows
The generic electronic module (GEM) constantly monitors its subsystems for concerns. If a concern is found in one of the subsystems, the GEM will record the concern in the form of a diagnostic trouble code (DTC). The ignition switch position isveryimportant to the GEM function. Often times, erratic or unexpected GEM function can be traced to concerns with ignition switch inputs.

Ignition Switch Positions

The position of the ignition switch is very important to correct GEM operation. The following is a brief description of five ignition switch positions.

When the ignition switch is in the RUN position, battery voltage should be present at the GEM RUN and RUN/ACC input terminals.

When the ignition switch is in the ACC position, battery voltage should be present at the GEM RUN/ACC input terminal only.

When the ignition switch is in the START position, battery voltage should be present at the GEM start/clutch depressed input.

The GEM module does not have an OFF or LOCK switch state input. The GEM will assume the OFF or LOCK position when there are no RUN, ACC, or START signals present.

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage.
Visual Inspection Chart

Electrical
Central junction box (CJB) fuse:
  • 8 (5A)
  • 15 (5A)
Wiring harness
Connector(s)
Circuitry
  1. If the concern remains after the inspection, connect the diagnostic tool to the data link connector (DLC) located beneath the instrument panel and select the vehicle to be tested from the diagnostic tool menu. If the diagnostic tool does notcommunicate with the vehicle:
  • check that the program card is correctly installed.

  • check the connections to the vehicle.

  • check the ignition switch position.
  1. If the diagnostic tool still does not communicate with the vehicle, refer to the diagnostic tool manual.
  1. Carry out the DATA LINK DIAGNOSTICS test. If the diagnostic tool responds with:
  • CKT914, CKT915 or CKT70 = ALL ECUS NO RESP/NOT EQUIP, refer to Module Communications Network.

  • NO RESPONSE/NOT EQUIP for GEM, go to pinpoint Test A.

  • SYSTEM PASSED, retrieve and record the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), erase the continuous DTCs and carry out self-test diagnostics for the GEM.
  1. If the DTCs retrieved are related to the concern, go to the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Index to continue diagnostics.
  1. If no DTCs related to the concern are retrieved, refer to the appropriate section of the Workshop Manual to continue diagnostics.

What a disaster. You sure you dont own some old Dodge product? LOL.. didnt know Ford was susceptible to electrical gremlins like this too.

Sorry OP.. not a good time.

@lexustech48 just buy my 2015 Excursion..I just put new tires on it!

Haha, thats such a killer Excursion Nick! Much as it would find a welcome home with me, mama and I are looking for a 2019 Super Duty come this January/Feb/March. We want to do some 5th wheel RVing in the future with the little one when she gets here, so I think my time as an Excursion owner is coming to an end in a few months.

Different vehicle here-
2K1 Explorer Sport 2-door 4x4

Same thing, discontinued & no re-fab or replacements...

I could only find these modules on eBay and the junkyard. I went thru a couple from a junkyard and so far one from a 4x2 version works on mine but no 4x4 & now the radio doesn't work plus no rear wiper function.... Looking at out-of-state wrecking yards for another module too.

Supposedly you can re-hab your original but that means finding the right resistors and doing some solder-work...

Or find an electronics repair firm to test the circuit board and repair components/circuitry.

The module is the same but the programming was different for your trim level, 4wd/2wd and engine. So it was not a plug and play endeavor.

So even if you were to take it to Ford they would have to download the original programming with IDS, install the new module and then reupload the stored program. If the original module was completely useless you would enter a build code and the IDS would get it off the Ford database and upload it to the new module.

Even finding one from the same year, same engine, same 4x4 system would still need an individual program to fuction correctly. It was a terrible designed system and the early 02-05 trucks had massive issues with the circuit boards going bad. New updated module usually fixed it.

Ill have to take a peek. I have the gas V10.

What part number are you looking up? If youre looking for "GEM" it wont show as that isnt under the Ford nomenclature.

Check for Multi-Fuction Module. It should be part number MFM16RM (14B205) and they are available for a 2001 Excursion with the 6.8L from what im seeing. Cost is $300.14 with a $50 core charge. See if Auto Nation can get it?

Best of luck with whatever you decide (fix or new truck). In regards to parts, it's my understanding that when a model is no longer exists, parts are to be supplied for up to 10 years. Since your Excursion is well beyond that, it's no surprise things are getting harder to find.

@13COBRA - Getting rid of it already???

Eh, everything is for sale. I've had it 9 months now haha Longest I've kept anything besides my Viper.

Kevin, I appreciate the lookup. I called my Ford dealers parts dept and put one on order. $220 out the door plus $50 core. Said they only had 1 unit showing up in their ordering system, but it could be just a weird place holder.

I've got an an 01' Ex and have never heard of a GEM. After reading this thread I was thinking I should buy one for an on-hand spare...at $220 I guess not!
Hell, if you plan on keeping your Ex for the long haul, that $220 + $50 core charge is peanuts compared to trying to scour for a used one. Every Excursion that was compatible in the junkyards had them missing. On Ebay they are $300+ for an unknown unit.

Some automotive electronic repair shops may be able to fix it, but having a Ford refurbished unit ready to go is peace of mind. I *think* 99-01 Super Duty and Excursion are the most susceptible. 2002 they re-did the electronics and Im not sure they had a similar GEM.

Well, bad news gentlemen. My Ford parts department called me just now. The GEM order was placed on intergalactic backorder by Ford with a fulfillment date of November 2020. Pretty much meaning that they are, in fact, done refurbishing the modules.

This is not good news for me, or even guys trying to keep their rigs running.

FYI for guys trying to find one of these for either a Super Duty or Excursion, I ran the production number on the GEM (in my case 1C3T-14B205-EB) on ebay and found one reportedly refurbished from a seller called your_part_source. 3 month warranty with it, but was offered a 1 year Square Trade insurance policy on it for $50 from ebay. Seller had a 100% positive rating with 22,000+ rating. Ordered one. Got my fingers crossed its good. If not, at least I can get my money back.

you might also see if he can refurb/turn yours around to have as a spare....or buy a spare to have on hand.

100% sure the GEM is the issue ?? I know bad grounds or batteries can cause all sorts of weird shit. Is GEM failure a common thing???

I think that one will work just fine brother. Sometimes even the ebay/amazon shit works just fine. Hell recently I gambled on a 02 sensor on amazon, but it saved me $270 LOL.

I’m with you on this.

I can’t see it causing the truck to completely lose power.

Wish I had one to see if truck ran and drove with gem fuses pulled.
