We're still humming right along at Lam Research (LRCX). For the first time ever, we are being asked to pull in spending to next quarter from next year. Usually it's, "what can we do without?"

Chip shortages weigh on General Motors' Q3 sales, down 48.8% Y/Y

  • General Motors (GM -0.1%) reports Q3 sales dropped 48.8% Y/Y to 446,997 vehicles vs. -31.5% forecast by Edmunds, due to semiconductor supply chain disruptions and historically low inventories.
  • Buick sales down 20.1%, Cadillac -31.7% and Chevrolet slipped 36.1% for the quarter.
  • On YTD basis total sales for Buick increased by 27%, GMC by 8% and Cadillac by 11%.
  • Fleet sales of full-size pickup trucks were up 13 %.
  • The new 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, which was revealed in September will begin arriving at dealerships in spring 2022 and the new 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 will also be revealed later this month.
  • “GM has been agile and decisive in managing COVID-related impacts on our production and wholesale volumes and we appreciate the support of our dealers and the loyalty of our customers,” said Steve Carlisle, executive vice president and president, GM North America. “The semiconductor supply disruptions that impacted our third-quarter wholesale and customer deliveries are improving. As we look to the fourth quarter, a steady flow of vehicles held at plants will continue to be released to dealers, we are restarting production at key crossover and car plants, and we look forward to a more stable operating environment through the fall.”

Marvell CEO: 'Something has to give' in chip demand for quick end to 'painful' supply shortages

  • CEO Matthew Murphy of Marvell Technology (NASDAQ:MRVL) said Friday that "something has to give" in the current "unprecedented" levels of chip demand in order to bring a rapid end to the "painful" global supply shortage
  • Speaking to CNBC, Murphy predicted that the chip shortage will continue through at least the end of 2022 if the current levels of demand continue.
  • However, the Marvell CEO argued that a slackening in some parts of the market would free up capacity and relieve some of the chip shortages, an event he sees as likely.
  • Murphy noted that "every single end market for semiconductors is up simultaneously," a state of affairs that is unique in his decades-long experience as a technology executive.
  • The CEO added that this situation is unsustainable over the longer term, projecting that some parts of the market would likely cool over the next 12 months.
  • "It makes no sense to me," he said. "There's no way from my point of view that every segment of the electronics industry stays up and to the right, ripping demand for the next 12 months.
  • Murphy, whose company designs fabless semiconductors, reasoned that an inevitable retreat in some parts of the market would allow chip-building capacity to be used by the economy's more critical segments.
  • "I think something's got to give -- and when it gives, that should free up the capacity in aggregate for the rest of industry to go consume and ultimately to place it in right alignment with the true demand," he said.
  • Boosted by the broad demand for its products, MRVL has seen significant strength in 2021. The stock rose from mid-May into the end of August. Shares have moved generally sideways recently and are currently sitting just off a 52-week high of $64.07.

Intel also said that it will act as a “foundry,” or a manufacturing partner, for other chip companies that focus on semiconductor design but need a company to actually make the chips. Intel said its foundry division will be called Intel Foundry Services and will be led by Randhir Thakur, a current Intel senior vice president.

We can't staff a burger King or Wendy's...

They know America doesn't have the workforce capacity.

Not that they cant, its that they won't. Biden free money. Why work at fast food when you make more to stay home.

I thought that name sounded familiar, so I looked him up. Sure enough he was at Applied Materials during my 3rd stint there. Yeah, classic example of, "thank you sir, may I have another..." AMAT is known within the industry as The Evil Empire.

Chinese power shortage. I heard Tesla production has been affected.

China is also considering raising power prices for factories as an energy shortage there has unleashed turmoil in commodities markets and prompted silicon makers to dramatically slash production.

General Motors and Wolfspeed inks strategic silicon carbide supplier agreement

  • General Motors (NYSE:GM) and Wolfspeed (NASDAQ:WOLF) +3.3% premarket, announced a strategic supplier agreement to develop and provide silicon carbide power device solutions for GM’s future electric vehicle programs.
  • The silicon carbide will specifically be used in the integrated power electronics contained within GM’s Ultium Drive units in its next-generation EVs.
  • As a part of the agreement, GM will participate in the Wolfspeed Assurance of Supply Program, which is intended to secure domestic, sustainable and scalable materials for EV production.
  • “Our agreement with Wolfspeed represents another step forward in our transition to an all-electric future,” said Shilpan Amin, GM vice president, Global Purchasing and Supply Chain. “Customers of EVs are looking for greater range, and we see silicon carbide as an essential material in the design of our power electronics to meet customer demand. Working with Wolfspeed will help ensure we can deliver on our vision of an all-electric future.”
  • The silicon carbide power device solutions will be produced at Wolfspeed’s 200mm-capable Mohawk Valley Fab in Marcy, New York, launching in early 2022.

Silicon Carbide definitely has it's advantages in high power applications, but it is a real bitch to etch. One of the programs I run at work is seeing how well one of our chambers will etch SiC. It's a whole different ball game than etching silicon.

It is all happening so fast it boggles the mind.

Nissan semiconductor shortages continue as company suspends work at 2 plants

  • Nissan (OTCPK:NSANY -5.9%) announces two temporary production halts at two Mexico plants in October due to the semiconductor chip shortage. The Nissan Aguascalientes plant will be closed for 11 days while its CIVAC plant will stop work for 8 days.
  • "We continue to make adjustments to our production process to minimize the impact this has had on the automotive industry locally and globally," said Nissan, as it seeks to revamp production to normal levels and ensure deliveries reach customers in time.
  • Semiconductor developer Marvell believes that the chip shortage crisis will continue until at least the end of 2022 if demand doesn't fall while AMD's CEO thinks the chip shortage will begin to ease in 2022.
