Ford has a new oil filter FL2087A. This filter has a plastic insert as opposed to a steel insert that is in the original OEM FL2087 filter. So be careful when you order filters that you get one with the metal liner inside. There have been reports of some dealers installing the wrong filter FL2087A and destroying motors.

I haven't seen a GT500 engine destroyed due to dealer oil filter install but I have seen a photo or two of a somewhat damaged filter. I'm not certain it was due to incorrect installation or failure due to the filter being incorrect for the application.

The latest filter that Ford has come out with uses a plastic reinforcing cage inside it as opposed to the original filter that was used previously, which indeed used a steel cage. The "steel" filter was very robust. I cut all my filters apart to inspect the media closely and I can honestly say that the original unit was an impressive piece. In case anyone isn't aware, during covid Ford had a very difficult time sourcing these (and obviously, a host of other hardware across the spectrum). I had the opportunity to see some internal correspondence during that period and it was clear that Ford wanted to cut the cost of the filter by having it redesigned. Purolator was the manufacturer struggling to meet demand at that time. The latest filter is far less complex and on its face many take the switch from steel to a plastic cage as a sign of weakness. I trust that the new version meets Ford spec. That said, did I stock up on the steel version? Yes. Am I a fan of the new filter? No. Just know that the steel units have not been in production for some time and that you aren't likely to find one unless you dig.

Tob does Purolator make a filter equivalent to the previous Motorcraft spec?
Any aftermarket filters with steel internals?

The Amsoil filter might be a good option. I may switch to those for my 350 if the fl2087 isn't available.

Here's a related thread from March, 2023. Post #5. It mentions the original FL2087 and the preferred metal cage.

I only know that during the period that Purolator produced them for Ford that they did not sell an equivalent on their own, and I mean "equivalent" in terms of identical construction.

I have not seen an aftermarket filter that I thought was as robust as the original Ford filter.

You will no longer find the original 2087. "We" have been heavily hording them on the GT500 board. My plan was an oil change every two track days on the 500, so I now have 17 of those filters.

Maybe the new one is good enough, but I still see the original as better. I figure let others be the Guinea Pigs over the next couple years. I suspect if anything, the 2087A "might" matter in rare cases of cold oil (cold oil pressure is upwards of 120 PSI on these Predators), high revving, and an extended drain interval combination.

You will no longer find the "original" from Amazon, RockAuto, Summit (I got the last 4) or Walmart. Some still on E-bay for upwards of $60-100.

We do have the old style metal core filters on hand in limited quantity, $26.39 each. Hit me up directly if you want one, two a dozen. :)

They have been replaced by the new design so once the old inventory with the metal core is gone, they're gone.

Do you know how many this one person bought? Depending on the quantity that was on hand, I'd say maybe a bit greedy to snag them all when many other might want at least a few for future use.

Yeah, without going into too many details it was quite a few (less than 100). I wasn't part of the transaction so I didn't get a chance to put my two cents in about limiting the number sold.

Doesn't look like majority of owners will have an option now other than the plastic 2087A.

Again, what is the concern or cause of failure here?

There's some concern about the plastic core of the new design failing and allowing the filter to collapse. I can't say I've heard of it happening but I'm not everywhere so I don't always know all the issues going on.

I have an updated video coming out in the near future.
