just seen you post on po171/174....i was just up in the city working on a guys truck... could have swung by and listened...

i have had my share of issues on our cobra trying to keep it going strong..

i think i know what sound your hearing thats off key....however it could be more than 1 thing causing it...

the sound your hearing is the raspy sound thats normall but it sounds gargled /choked-up when your trying to accelerate, with the feeling of no power unless you nail it...

Dude no offense, I tried reading this like three times ad can't understand what your saying. But, if it sounds like exhaust leaks and you smell gas try Jacking the car up and tighten everything. If you start the car and stand outside it and rev it you could probably hear where the leak is coming from.

po171/174 are lean codes...which 99% is just a vaccum leak...the leak will be enough to affect both sides of engine...

the post you replied in po171/174 read what i posted...it will explain what is happening....

as you see in that thread the areas of common leaks were giving..

back side of supercharger...2 black elbows with red hoses going into them..its common for the top 1 to crumble and leak...

air filter to throttle body...right at throttle body the clamp and rubber seal are common to leak....

the hardest 1 is the hose under the blower...blower must be removed to get to it...

on mine i used a hose clamp...this hose will harden and spin on nipple which is a leak it should not turn/spin.....

being these cars have aged now that hose below the blower is most likely the issue...

you should have stayed with original thread,,and updated as you were finding issues and making repairs...

it helps knowing the history to give better advise,,,i know you have a couple of different threads on some of your issues...

last we talked on phone,,you said you had replaced the elbow on back of blower for pcv,,but i recall you saying you had cut the black connector holding 3 red hoses?

since you have acouple of threads maybe update things done and codes ,,,and better vid or link to vid...

after stopping bye and listening to your car,,here are my thoughts...

1st,,your car was nice,,even in garage being hard to see..

you were in car starting it so i not sure what you heard,,but from outside it was very raspy when it first started up...the raspy noise only lasted a few seconds before sounding normal...but as car got warmer the exhaust sound changed,,,to me it sounded like knocking sound...

after wiping my finger in tail pipe it only came up with water and light black sutt..nothing grimy black...

the rear bumper had no signs of burning/blowing oil,,,

your engine was very quiet,,even the injectors were quiet...

i didnt like the shake that would come and go at idle,,,my guess is clutch change is the cause for out of balance feel...you said it was a specs but i dont remember style...

when i was looking at fuel trims with predator...your trims were balancing 0+/-,,but i noticed that other o2 readings werent showing ....

car has pulley/cai/tune...so it has to be from the tune,as to why those sensor readings werent there....with my set up it still shows all o2 sensor functions...so this was great to learn,,but would take some time to compare between cars as to changes in tune,,how often do you have side by side cobras to compare....

so i agree with you on mufflers could be causing wierd sound,,,,use the search function,,being 8yrs now i think you should be able to find enough info on how magnaflow lasts...

i think mine were flowmaster 40american thunder II...GOT THEM THRU SUMMIT..

we got ours in march -03,,, so what was being shown in mustang mags is most had these parts for exhaust,,so thats why i went with bbk/flow with 2 1/2in pipes...

i still have my stock system,,,if you want you can try catback to see if sound changes,,before blowing cash...

yeah, vaccumn leak will make it sound like it's got a cam & missing (and the codes), so will an exhaust leak ( + codes)..

on my car the idle pully had a bad bearing probably because the previous owner didn't torque it down :dw: but after that was replaced wass fine,
check your pully bearings too if you hear a knock sound

if it is still an exhaust leak sound
somone probably forgot the darn gasket between midpipe, manifold on the passenger side.. that side's always a pain! no matter how much you tighten it down
sooo you should just get a set of long tubes, off road mid pipe into mac dumps to minimize the leak points :) haha

UPDATE..got a compression test done and I might had had owned my last ford ever piston 7 had 80% compression the the miss i had is cus ive been running on 7 cyclinders. ima get a second opinion does a wet and dry compression test give diffrent results or just rules out whether its valves other than the bottom end?

Sore to hear of your troubles.

That's what it sounded like when I first read your thread. But I was hoping not.

I had the exact same thing.

The '03 motor had an inefficient head casting that provided inadequate cooling and the exhaust port design was prone to heating up and warping the valve guides. This created a valve "tick" sound and leads to compression loss.

Sadly, all original engines share this flaw and it shows up at various stages of the engines life.

Mine was bad. Two cylinders affected. I had wondered why the car shook like a crammed big block and had that strange sounding exhaust.

Compression and leakdown nailed it.

I was going to Get a valve job, but then I'm stuck with heads that run hotter than anything and the same issue will pop up again. Then I thought about buying new heads. Except, for the price of the pair, I could have a new long blOck for 2k more. So that's what I did.

Anyone who didn't have the new head installed when the tsb came out... I don't know what to say. For those of us who bought it used, it really sucks because we bought a car with no way to have ford cover their problem.

Long post. I know. But wanted to share in order to help you make the best decision.
