Palomar used to float the entire telescope on Flying Horse telescope Oil but has made the switch to a longer lasting, less dangerous in terms of flammability, fully synthetic oil.

Doesn't sound as cool as Flying Horse Telescope Oil, it's now called Quintolubric 822 and costs $1708.00 for a 54 gallon drum. They replace it about every four years.

Mobil was the previous supplier of the Flying Horse telescope Oil and had been for the previous 60 years without any corrosion or wear problems. And it only caused a very minor fire once that was easily extinguished.

Nothing to do with our cars but since it was oil related maybe somebody would be interested.

True synthetic base oils have a higher flash point, requiring the base oil to be hotter before ignition. I see where they are going with that.
