I’ve had a radar detector for as long as I can remember, and yes, I’ve still gotten pulled over plenty...usually at night with their handy dandy instant on while on lonely two lane roads.

Now I almost always unplug it, pull it down and throw it in the console before I ever stop. I always have my license and insurance out, radio off, and interior light on if at night. I generally ask for a warning since I have a CDL, and honestly 9/10 times they’re cool cool and give me one. I couldn’t begin to tell you how many times I’ve been stopped doing 90+ and drove away with a warning, however, if they don’t that’s fine too, it’ll just cost me a few hundred to have a lawyer take care of it. I’m an adult and I chose to speed, so I really can’t bitch about getting popped.

Case in point...tonight.

Coming into a literal one light speed trap town, I’m slowing down already, see his blacked out ass (which I do not agree with), check my speed (on my GPS enabled radar detector) which say 38mph. I am down to the speed limit when I pass him, but I see his Brahe lights and reverse lights flash and know what’s up. He trails me for a few seconds and this is when my radar goes off for the first time, followed by red and blues.

I pull over just like I always do...light on, radio off, license out...but left the radar up, but muted. Officer creeps up and says “reason I stopped you was I clocked you at 42”. Hmm. While I’m handing him my license I ask, what did you clock me with?? He says he got me with his rear radar. I said, that’s funny...this didn’t go off until you were tailing me as I point to my dash. He replies “hmm...guess you better get a new one”. At this point I already knew I was getting a ticket as his attitude came off like he could be a real prick. I say well sir, that IS a new one, and one of the best...I’m sure it would have gone off had you actually turned your radar on.

He comes back with a ticket and starts to go through his shpeal and I interrupt and ask if I can see the radar...he looks at me like how DARE I ask that, and tells me no. He continues on with his rambling, and I interrupt him again (he’s starting to get pissed) and tell him that I’m pretty sure that if I ask to see it, he has to show me, and he snaps back “well, here’s the deal. I’m not letting YOOUU in my car!” As he goes back to rambling. I interrupt again (now he’s really getting pissed, face turning red type shit while I’m giving him the ‘I can do this all night smirk’) and ask well then where is the proof I was speeding?? He says it’ll be in his body cam footage that I can request IF I want to contest it, to which I reply: you bet your mother ****in ass I’m contesting this bullshit. He goes back to rambling. I interrupt yet again and ask if it’s indicated on his computer when he activated his radar. He rolls his eyes and takes a deep breath then tells me that I’ll just have to request it from the chief. I’m laughing while signing the ticket.

As he’s telling me to slow down and to have a nice night I unpause the radio and drown him out, think about a burnout but decide against it.

My 0-30 time was good in that loud ass **** you diesel kinda way.

So. Think he turned it on? Do they have to show you if you ask? Thoughts?

Obligatory pic..

The computer? Ur wondering if the Radar displays on his computer? The answer is no and he could have easily turned it on then off then back on again.

He doesn't have to show u anything other than proper documentation that indicate it was calibrated within a specific date if u go to court but on scene u get nothing and are entitled to nothing.

If he's using KA-band he will get u before ur Radar goes off if he knows what he's doing and radar detectors aren't full proof either but geez 43mph is corny AF!

exactly.. 42 mph in a 35? lmao

I agree. I’ll get out of it wether I use a lawyer or talking to the DA. It was actually 42 in a 30, but still...

I take tickets much easier when I’ve actually earned them like 95 in a 75 lol.

So they can turn on KA band in a “secret” way as not to be detected? First I’ve heard of that, but I’m no expert on it.

gotta love one horse towns. One near us in NC has a 1/4 mile area through downtown that drops to 25, forgot about it one Friday night, slowed down about half way through it. I saw a cop pull out behind me, so I just kept in on cruise control at the posted limit...followed me almost 5 miles back to the interstate and turned around.

In NY (amd many other states) you can be convicted of speeding based only on the LEO's visual estimate of speed. If radar was used, at court the primary evidence will be the visual estimate which is then corroborated with the radar.

Could he have been using MRCD? I know those are tough to detect and might even be disabled on your Escort.

Either way he is most likely lying about radaring you. I've had a radar detector for 12 years or so and it has never not gone off if KA is on, even if the cop had it on hold and activated to be sneaky.

In court you could request verification his unit has been calibrated. If this information is not provided, you might get the charge dismissed. There is also a chance the officer may not be able to show up in court. My $.02. Good luck.

Sorta reminds me of a tale,,,, in court on speeding, represented by a local lawyer.
LEO stopped and cited the offender by his visual determination, he was speeding.
Lawyer questioned LEO, about his experience and ability to judge speed by visual and experience.
LEO, yeah I feel I am pretty good.
Lawyer took a quarter out of his pocket, holding out at arms length, dropped the quarter.
Lawyer to LEO, so what would be your estimate on the speed of that quarter.
I think the lawyer apologized to the judge after the laughter stopped.

Whenever I get pulled over for speeding the LEO always asks the question "Do you know how fast you were going?" I set my crujise control to posted plus 9 so I tell him that speed. Yes, I am telling him I am speeding by 8 or 9 mph. The only problem I have is when I'm going up a hill the cruise kicks in and puts me at about 11 or 12 over. What do you think is sitting just over the crest? Yup, a LEO from one of the local jurisdictions. I have always been honest when I tell them how fast I was going. This approach has worked for 20 years. I never try to BS them. I think they appreciate it.

He never asked me how fast I thought I was going, he just told me what he got me at.

Called and talked to the chief and he referred me to the judge, who after talking to the DA, was told that she is a kunt and that everyone is guilty until proven innocent in her court. She’s also married to a hi-po or some shit, and will not share any evidence of guilt, or the lack of, with anyone, even legal defense. He referred me to another lawyer who is going to handle it.

Problem is if I want to fight it, it’ll cost me $4,500, if I want it to go away and stay off my record, it’s about $600.

As pissed off as I am about it, I’m not pissed off enough to blow $4k to prove it.

Guess you are guilty until proven innocent. What’s scary is that if it happens this easily on a speeding ticket, I can’t imagine what happens on a real case.

As a 21 year career LEO, let me set a few things straight from your original post.

1. NO radar detector/lidar detector/etc.... is 100% accurate. There will always be some point at which it won't pick up the device the LEO is using. It happens. I don't care what the manufacturer touts the reliability rate is, NONE are 100% accurate.

2. Most state do not have laws where the LEO must have any lights on at all to work stationary speed enforcement. Only state I know of is PA, and if it is dark outside, a stationary LEO must have the park lamps activated. This may have changed, and there may be more states, but I am not sure.

3. A majority of courts do not recognize GPS speeds as certified speed measurement devices. Same with using GPS to measure distances.

4. Yes, you can always ask the officer to see the radar unit, however, there is no legal precedent that says you have "a right" to see it. Even if you did, many departments have policies that officers will NOT lock the speed in once a speed is obtained (keeps LEO from having a high speed locked in and writing everyone for that speed). So even if you got out and looked at it, you probably wouldn't see anything but a blank screen.

5. I'd be getting a little pissed with you too if you kept interrupting me while I tried to do my job. The roadside is NOT the place to argue or contest the ticket. The courtroom is the place for that. The LEO only makes the charge, and you have a right to disagree with it. But save the arguments and back talk for the courtroom.

6. You have the legal right to send the officer's department a Motion for Discovery through the courts, or send them a FOIA request for any information about the case. The LEO does NOT have to comply with such requests on the roadside.

7. Trying to handle of all this stuff over the telephone normally doesn't work either. Due process is through the courtroom, not the telephone. It is innocent until proven guilty. The officer will have to prove the case in court. If you want to be found not guilty, then it is your job to prove that the officer's testimony is incorrect. You need solid evidence for that, not just opinions on how things are supposed to work.

Good luck with whichever way you decide to handle it.

Sounds like $600 is a bargain at twice the price.

Love your #5.

Not trying to be a dick about it, but a lot of people think they can argue their way out of getting the ticket. And most don't realize that the more you run your mouth on the side of the road, the more it hurts you in the court. I am a very strong advocate of people just being quiet and take the ticket. Fight it in court. The more you talk, the more you give to me.
