Well I have finally decided to epoxy coat my garage floor. I will be paying a professional for a 3 coat system (primer, base, clear). I know it will be done right with the concrete grinded and prepped properly. Looking for opinions from those who have also had theirs done professionally and actually WORK in their garage. The company that I am having do the work has some really cool color schemes available including the "graphite smoke" shown here:

My worry is that a floor like this will scuff and wear quickly. May look good for a showroom, but may not last. Maybe I should stick with a more traditional finish like this?

I have the last option in both of my garages. The original owner of my house had it put in, in 2007. I'd give it a 7/10 thirteen years later.

I'm very happy I did mine. of course, it is only as good as the prep work and it sounds like you done it well. you'll spend the first month in the garage just staring at the floor

Almost forgot, functionally over beauty. Pick a color that doesn't work against you. Make sure the color/look of the floor doesn't camouflage things that you might drop on it.

Mine is right at 3 years old now. I love it. It's a Sherwin Williams epoxy and holds up very well. It has a poly clear coat. I asked for less flake than normal. I need to wash it down.

My dad had it done with this really cool green and silver metallic. It does scuff a little and lose it's luster after time. I'm a function over form kind of person so I would get something brighter that will reflect light and show dropped bolts, spills, etc better.

Op, I really wanted the high gloss showroom floor like the example pic you posted there. But, it would drive me bat shit crazy as soon as I scuffed or marred the clear coat.

I opted for a polyaspartic floor coating. Semi gloss sheen. He would have put a second layer of polyurethane down if I wanted to.

It takes heavy impacts without so much as a chip.

My next house will have the same floor, and than my "showroom" parking spot will have high gloss epoxy with swirls and stuff

@03cobra#694 has a floor similar to mine.

No matter what, do not use the big box stores epoxy kits.

I did mine myself with a rustolium kit from lowes in my old house. After 7 years it never chipped or degraded. I even accidentally dropped my car on to jack stands pretty hard once and to my surprise the coating held up. I spilled brake fluid and accidentally left it over night. Next afternoon I found it, wiped it up no problem. Only paint I've ever seen withstand brake fluid.

I would go with a more traditional finish, not only will you not have to worry about scuffing clear coat but you'll also cut down on the glare when you have the garage door open.

Did mine myself, used the 3x commercial durable stuff at Menards. I did the graphite. You can see through the clear and graphite in some spots which is ok, just make sure you prep and clean the concrete first. You'll also want rubber runners or rugs with rubber backing, on the occasion I slap on some crocs (lol) and its wet...... I'll fall on my a$$.

I do, still love it. Easy to clean, non slip and holds up good to harsh liquids. I'll post pictures when I get home.

Coatings and Tire Tracking - Tire Marks on Garage Floor Epoxy

Do yourself a favor and read this. It is a highly specialized field. Professional applications have strict application weather protocols. Temperature and humidity mostly. Yes, I done this in airport hangers and large warehouses. Find out the brand paint and down load application specs. You'll be surprised.

I used epoxy coat brand several years ago. I have not had it chip or peel anywhere and I've been pretty abusive. It shows some wear but I doubt any flooring product wouldn't if your actually using your garage. I did the lighter gray color with black white and gray chips. Reflects light very well and its pretty easy to find dropped items on it. At the time of install i opted not to to the uv clear coat and the side by the garage door is starting to slightly yellow but its hardly noticeable.

Some nice floors in this thread. I wanted to do an epoxy floor a couple of years ago but the contractor told me to test for water leeching first. I didn't have water but I did have white chalking. So I tested the floor for a week and found out that I had a small amount of moisture that leeches through. That's a no-no for epoxy. So my next option if I choose to do it would be a RaceDeck.

Water, that’s our life here. I don’t believe him. Diamond grind, and apply the materials.
