@s351 Heat is the issue. I clearly said that in my post. The piston/wall is too tight and makes tons of heat. Deposition and heat make kaboom happen. 160 stats don't let the head get hot enough to fully burn the fuel/gasses. It leaves deposits. Pre ignition at high load is very bad. Detonation is very bad at any load. Both detonation and pre ignition are more likely to occur with excess build up. The 160 stat will be too cold for daily driving unless you are in 100° weather and bumper/bumper traffic. It won't do anything for additional cooling ability once the mill is hot. The problem with the stock stat isn't that it's a 190. It's that it's a bleeding 190 that doesn't fully open until 219° iirc. A fully opening 190° stat is great in most climates, and a 180° in very hot places like Arizona is a great idea. Ask a modular engine builder. Mine said years back don't put that in. Do it right, this is why. Band aid remedies have a place, this isn't it. We get -10 to 110° weather. A 160° stat would only do any good in mid July when canyon carving hard. Otherwise it would dramatically gunk my heads. If someone lives in a very hot climate and daily drives, a fully opening 180° is all they'd need if it had everything else in good working order. Anyways, opinions are like assholes, and I'm constantly told I'm an asshole. But, if a guy reading this doesn't run into an issue or major failure by avoiding something that is well intended but incorrect for their application, I'll gladly take the heat of a little well intended grilling from someone also just looking out. There's lots of bad info on the Internet. Good looking out bud.
