How come when you go on a Dyno run you have to lock the converter to get the true HP rating??? I mean when your on the street or going down the strip you don't lock the converter.....

The L converter is locked up more often than not. Once you are under way and at a speed that requires the rpm to be higher than the stall speed it locks up and stays that way.

On the dyno you want it locked up to make the numbers more consistent. I always hated tuning nonlockup cars because the numbers can change drastically just based on how you roll on the throttle and how the converter reacts to it.

when the converter is unlocked there is slippage. this will skew the numbers, as noted above. If the converter is locked, it is then like a fully engaged clutch on a manual car. all the power is being transferred. The only real reason for a converter to be unlocked is to allow the engine to get into is powerband.
