Back story: last summer I lost cylinder 8 in my 2011 5.0. Took the car to HPJ performance in St. Louis for an inspection. They told me it needs a new shortblock. I'd like to get the car running, not really looking to go full race with it. Think those days are over. I just want a weekend car again.

I have the motor stripped to the longblock right now. Motor is still in the car. If I pickup a shortblock, how hard is the swap? I've never opened an engine but I do work with mechanical stuff on a daily basis and have a good understanding of stuff like torque specs.

TL;DR: car needs a shortblock. I'm wondering if I can do it myself.

With the exception of the machine work and rotating assembly balancing, I did an entire engine rebuild myself in a garage. However, the garage I was in was owned by a guy who builds his own race car engines and has all the devices to measure things like cylinder bore and rod bolt stretch.

If you are just putting in an already assembled short block, then I see no reason you can’t do it.
