Epic video.

Sometimes I wish I went with a combat job with the Marines than a mechanic job with the USAF. Why? I don't know. Maybe for the adventure, while a dangerous one. I guess I can't really say that quite yet though since I'm not even in yet (4 days!).

Cool pics. You're Navy deployed with Army correct? Can I ask what you're doing with them?

Provincial Reconstruction. We pretty much try to connect the people with the government. We go around to villages and build school, hospitals, bridges, provide security for them etc etc... I personally am the commo guy, keep the BFT's and Harris's going, also the TACSAT guy when we go on missions too far from the fob...

So far Its been an experience, working with the army... they have different ways of doing things that take time getting use to. Especially these 181 Infantry guys...

you can either go to photobucket or some other such site and upload them there, or host them as attachements here. Go to the pics and vids section, there is even a how to

On the left, a "Brand New" 2006 C-130 "Stretched J" next to a 1968 C-130 "Super E"; which flew in Vietnam. This is why aircraft maintenance is so important.

The 6 blade R391 props are only available on the J-models (96+), which come with the newer, Rolls-Royce designed AE 2100 motors.
The R391's are all composite, as opposed to the 4 blade (54H60) aluminum alloy (pop can). Unfortunately, the AF does not own the R391's yet, and all they can do it remove and replaced them, whereas we can rebuild our own 4 blade props from the ground up.

The purpose is:
-better efficiency; they create more torque (or bite more air) than the 4-blades
- less noise; with the increase in blades, there is less space between each blade as it rotates. Blade track, is the path that the prop blades follow while rotating. More blades, Less noise. Like the difference between a Huey and a Blackhawk.
-decreased vibration; a motor spinning at 13,280 rpm and a prop at 1024 rpm create a ton of vibration throughout the aircraft. This cuts down on overall aircraft vibration.

On a side note: All the props are synchrophased. Essentially, there is a computer system controlling the props rotation. It's job is to make sure that no blades from opposite motors pass each other at the same time. This creates a massive vibration and can damage the motors and the airframe.
The lead, or "master" motor is one of the inboard motors; either #2 or #3.
In this example, #2 is lead. #1 Prop gets a +18* lead over #2. #3 will get a -4* lead over #2. And #4 will get a +16* lead over #3.
Man, did I go off course. I love my job. Sorry.
The 6 bladed prop will not fit on the older H-models. Different motors.

And Hamilton Standard, our prop company has an 8-bladed(NP2000) prop for the C-130H/E models. They provide even lower noise and greater efficiency. Like 8% fuel savings, greater climb, quicker take-off, and more thrust.
Here's a little article on the 8-blade:
Engineers testing eight-blade prop for C-130

I hope didn't go too overboard with the answer. But thanks for asking!
