I'm installing a cobra IRS in my 70 Mach 1 mustang and am trying to get the correct angle on the cradle. I know it is slightly tilted where the lower control arm front bushing is higher up than the lower control arm rear bushing but not sure exactly how much. Could someone get those measurements for me, it would be much appreciated. Here is pic of how I am measuring mine.

I think what you need to be more concerned about is the pinion angle vs your trans output angle.

Since the angle of your transmission output shaft could very well be different than the Cobra, using our LCA angle as a guide may not work out.

I would call Maximum Motorsports and ask about the angle. I spoke with a rep at a show a long time ago and he said they try to raise the front cradle mount as much as possible in their cars. I think it helps with antisquat. They might be able to give you an angle to shoot for to get better handling.

This is what FTBR suggests as well but you still don’t get it quite where it should be.

Right now my biggest issue is trying to get the ride height correct. There’s too much gap between the wheel and fender. Coilovers are at the lowest possible setting and can’t go to a shorter shock or spring. I was trying to make sure the angle is correct but if you’re saying it can be beneficial to raise the front mounting point, that might give me some options. I actually can’t raise the front mounting point anymore but I could potentially lower the rear which would change the pivot and lift the lca at ride height and move the wheel further into the wheel well.

Well on the cobras, the mounting points of the cradle and 3rd member in relation to the output shaft angle, leave you needing to tilt the 3rd member up as much as possible with spacers.

Again, this may not be what you need at all.

I like the project but has anyone done this before? You’re kind of limited on the IRS cradle mounting points but are you able to modify where it mounts to the car? Welding in mounts that fit the cradle bushings or?

I think putting our IRS in older mustangs is becoming popular. They make conversion kits for the first gen cars so I imagine someone may have done this already.
