Was wondering if anyone here has dealt with their kid having Cancer or a serious medical illness.

The reason I am asking is, my 10 month old might have Retinoblastoma, I was feeding him in mid October and the light had caught his eye a certain way, I was able to see a orange glow towards the bottom right of his pupil. The next day I had taken him to his primary, they did a exam and said "they do see a spot" He is being referred to a ophthalmologist on the 13th of this month. It was the soonest they can get him in besides making him wait til January. From what I have read so far about this eye disease, it is pretty common. My biggest worry is that he would have to have chemotherapy or have to have the eye removed.

I have tried to keep this in all to myself, but it is starting to eat me a little, I guess the worst thing was reading about it at night when he is a sleep. He seems fine, starting walking at 8 months old, and is now climbing stairs. I just needed to get this kind of off my chest. If anyone has information on this, I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Just went through a similar scare myself man. All I can tell you is think positive. A lot of signs can sometimes be innocent. I hope all turns out well for you.

That's a heavy burden right there. Hard not to let it worry you.

I can't share any experience with this specific ailment, but I have had some retina surgeries in the past couple of years, and the things eye surgeons can do today is simply amazing.

It's the waiting that sucks, he is active though, doesn't feel any pain and I know he can see out of the eye, he sees everything he is not supposed to be getting into lol. From what I understand this is the whole "no red eye in a picture disease". Tumor is blocking the retina.

I hope it turns out fine for you and your son and I can only advise to get 2nd opinions in these types of scenarios.
When my son was about 4 years old he had a couple of episodes where he couldn't walk for a couple of days and he had no reflexes and the doctor said he was sure he had MS. Took him to a specialist and he said he just had weak reflexes. Never found out why he couldn't walk but it passed and never happened again.

I'm not a father, but I was in the shoes your son is in. I had an illness that nearly killed me 4 times, over the course of 8 years. It's hard, and my father took it nearly as hard as I had it. One thing he developed while I was sick is he became very skeptical of doctors. I'm not saying you should be, but hopefully the diagnosis is the right one the first time. Fortunately your son will not remember this. Hopefully the doctors can save his eye.

Hang in there. Being a parent is the toughest and greatest job you'll ever have. As was said, the medical advances in eye care are truly amazing. The only advice I can give is to stay off of the Internet when it comes to diagnosing medical issues...you'll drive yourself crazy with the things you find. God bless and good luck to you and your family.

My son almost died in the ER when we found out that he had asthma. Could barely breathe, oxygen was in the 70’s/80’s, nurses had the bone drill IV outside of the room ready to go, etc. We had no idea how serious it was in the moment, it was just one of those things you go through and do what you have to do. A couple days later it was relayed to us just how severe the situation was and the gravity of it really set in. That scared the shit out of me and still does to this day. I cannot imagine having a child with a serious disease, or God forbid cancer, I have no idea what I would do.

Slow06, my friend and her husband just went thru this recently with their son.

She said I could copy and paste this to you...

"Most kids if there is no family history of retinoblastoma only have it in one eye. But there is a chance it can occur in the other eye. The best treatment for it is chemotherapy that is placed directly into the eye itself. The leading doctor for this disease is at Sloan Kettering in NYC. My son was 3yo when we found his. His was quite advanced but I’m happy to say after 4 doses of chemo the tumor is no longer active and it is very unlikely he will lose his eye. He is a year out from chemo and doing great but it is a difficult thing to watch your child go thru. "

Thanks everyone for all the info and support, I did feel like I was going crazy reading stuff on the internet. I am hoping after the 13th we can start treatment on what ever this is and finally get some answers. Luckily we have a St. Judes hospital about 10 minutes away.

Davesvt, hearing that your friends little one went through this and was able to beat it, makes me feel a ton better, I just wish little kids wouldn't have to go through anything like this.

I think a normal reaction is to expect the worst, but it's hopefully not the case here. God wouldn't put people through things they can't handle. i know it's nearly impossible, but try and not over worry yourself man. We're hoping it's nothing.

It does seem like a bad nightmare right now, it's the waiting. He runs around normal and plays. I have my older son and daughter, but this little guy has become my world and has bonded with me more than my other kids did.

He can hear my car pull up to the house, and gets the biggest grin when I walk in the house.

TK, I also think God would not put someone through something they wouldn't be able to handle. I am keeping strong and staying Positive as much as I can.
