Ceramic coating disaster.

Hey guys,
Looking for the opinion of those in the know. A customer recently came to me for some exhaust ceramic coating, we got talking and he told me he had his Pistons coded as a competitor before he found me.
What I’m about to show you will likely shock money. I asked him to take the Pistons back of the engine before starting it and give them to me so that I could fix them for free. I don’t even think I could at this point however. He’s about to start the engine after installing $8,000 turbo chargers on it and to be honest I’m terrified for him.
The morons at this other shop coated not only the domes but also the ring lands of the piston. There’s no way the rings will float properly. I’m also worried about the coating coming off and scoring the walls as well as damaging the turbos. What are your thoughts?

It looks like he needs a new set of pistons.
And a long discussion with that powder coated.

Thanks for the reply’s. He’s actually putting the car back together today unfortunately.
These are pistons that I have done and how they should look.

I honestly cannot even use them as ashtrays because of how shitty work is.

I promise they are ceramic coated, but it’s the water based kind that needs to be applied, baked and then polished. It should be shiny when done properly. May main concern is that it is on the sides of the pistons, ****ing up the piston to wall clearance and it’s inside the ring lands. There’s no way the rings will be able move and it will likely chip off and go through the turbos.... never mind scoring the bore.

Pistons need to go. The fact that this guy thinks it is a good idea to install those is mind boggling. Does he really not see what is going to happen?

After thinking it over I realize it’s impossible to remove that coating because it would have to be sandblast it off and it would throw the tolerances all out of spec. He needs new pistons. I’ll let you guys know what happens when he starts it in a couple days.‍♂️

I can’t believe o forgot to say, the customer is planning to make 800-900 hp on this motor with the custom turbos.
It’s a B5 Audi wagon.

He will need more than just pistons if he starts the car with those in there. I'm no expert but I would think he will have some descent cylinder wall scoring if he runs it. Does the motor turn over easily by hand?
