Nearly everything around me stopped accepting cash 2 weeks ago.
Due to national coin shortage... whatever TF that is.
Funny you mention that!!!
A friend of mine works at a well known casino as security. He was talking to the armored cars guys that there are pretty much no coins out there. He mentioned that to me the other night. Now it's starting to make sense.
A guy I know on Facebook that works for the MBTA, (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority), here in Boston said that he heard rumblings about them going cashless in 2022.

What happened to this Country? Wow.
Scary times. Very scary.

Interesting article. Well, 99% of my monthly bills are paid direct through my bank. No cash. No checks. My paycheck is a direct deposit. 99.9% of my daily personal financial transactions (clothes, groceries, gas, restaurants, household stuff, personal items, entertainment, etc.) are paid by credit card. I literally might see a total of $20-$30 in cash in my wallet each month. So yeah, at least in my case I am pretty much cashless.

I go months without touching cash. If I never had to toss a friend $15 for some pizza or so, I could 100% live without cash.

People bitch about the profits banks make, and then use a card for everything. The banks get to skim 2-5% off the transaction from the retailer, and then get interest if the bill isn't paid off at the end of the month. My boss accepts cash or check, if you want to charge he shows you the amount that will be added to your bill.

Our Federal Government is about to let the biggest blow to liberty happen to us with this cashless BS. We have already lost many of the liberties and freedoms our founding fathers sacrificed to allow us to benefit from, and now we are going to lose the rest. What really needs to happen is every freedom loving American to object firmly that we will not allow this to happen to us.

Our founders warned us about allowing the bankers to control our money. If we do not resist this now, we will find out what they meant in full. The Federal Reserve will own us, lock, stock, and barrel.

why do you think they are saying we have a "coin shortage". There is no ****ing shortage, they just want people using cards.

If you got cash you better get it in a bank stat and tie it to a debit card.
government ploy

I think some here are looking at cashless by itself without a block gain component.

No option is bad. Blockchain is the ultimate in government control.

Yeah, this is scary as hell and I hope it doesn't happen... This pandemic was the perfect storm for "justification" of so much bullshit that SHOULD NOT HAPPEN.

You'll never be "cashless" until precious metals are removed from our hands. Good luck with trying such a thing......today.

It already is cashless. The money is controlled by the FED (keep in mind this is completely separate entity from the government) that can make money out of thin air, since it is not backed by anything IE gold standard.

I forget which country, but I know it was in Africa. They (meaning at least some people) use cell phone minutes. Everyone has at least a flip phone. Minutes are a set thing, say 10 minutes for $4. You want to buy a goat off your neighbor, but don't want to take a bus into town to use the ATM? The goat costs $20...you just send your neighbor 50 minutes, which you can do via texting. Done deal, no fees, safe transaction, everyone is happy.

For the masses, I'll agree, but I've never once thought like that. I don't understand how someone can even think like that. $50 is $50 is $50. It doesn't matter if it's a check, an actual $50 bill or a credit card swipe. It's $50.

But clearly I understand my thinking is a minority when you look at Americans and credit car debt. 15+ years here and I've never paid any.

Yup, doesn’t matter what happens as it will be replaced by something deemed as having worth. Society has always been based on bartering, regardless of whether there was a monetary system in place.

Shit, I just got an email from Home Depot asking for a review of a lawn mower battery I just bought.

I paid in cash and got a hard copy receipt.

Let me know how paying for a tank of gas with some gold chips works out for you

Pretty easily actually.

What exactly are gold chips? Do you take a gold buffalo or eagle and cut it up? Furthermore why would you focus on gold when silver is readily available and has been the source material for our coins? Obviously the circulated coins we use today are clad garbage but that has not always been the case. Lets not even talk about silver proof sets.

Gold chips, flakes, bars, whatever.

Silver? Fine. Go get a tank of gas or pay for your groceries with a silver chain or a silver ring.

Precious metals have value but they are not common currency, they cannot be used as cash; you're purposely being obtuse

Silver has intrinsic value as does other metal(s). Silver coinage is readily available and quite desirable. People have been hording it since 1964. People have used precious metals in the past and we still follow the same formula with a slight variation. One doesn't need to go the route of jewelry hyperbole. Cashless? With our government? Talk about a pipe dream. There's a big difference between adding a decimal point and zeros to your bank account and having currency with actual worth.

Why do you think people make a dash for the bank if a disaster or something of that nature is impending? Can't they just rely on the ease and promise of going cashless? Why do you think people stock up on metals and coinage even in junk form?

I'm not arguing the value of precious metals, nor am I saying we shouldn't have gold/silver backed currency.

I'm just saying you can't use either for every day transactions.

Sure silver used to be in our coins, and yes they do still exist. However, if you were to take one of those true silver coins to a gas station for example, they wouldn't give you the value of the silver that's contained within, you'd only get whatever value is stamped on the coin.
