Can you use a front O2 sensors on the back behind cats?

So the front O2 sensors are interchangeable. But the back are color coded to the wiring and have notches for special fit.

First, why the heck did Ford do this? Are they really that different? From some research it seems functionally you can use at least some brands of front O2 sensors in the back if you cut the notches off.

Anyone confirm this?

Yes, they are all the same now. No more rear specific o2s
If you go to dealer and inquire all 4 now carry the original # from the fronts

back in the day it was common to swap the front and rear o2s after removing the cats to prevent codes. Was a 50/50 chance of working and surprisingly enough many more than I ever would have imagined reported to have had success doing so.

But yes as has been stated the o2s are all interchangeable

That is interesting. Never heard of swapping them for the no cats case. I always used mil eliminators on my Fox Body cars and my 98 Cobra.
