I've always wanted a saleen s-351, but I always knew I'd pay a huge premium and never keep it stock anyway. Last year I decided to build one instead. I had a black 95 gts as my second mustang and always miss that car. When I started my search, a laser red 95 gts with 90k miles popped up and I bought it for $4k. Other than the paint, this thing is mint. Bone stock, 0 rust underneath, interior is perfect. I know mods are always a loosing prospect, but if I were to build a fox I think it would pull high $20s when it comes time to sell. Under current market, the s351 replica might fetch $18k after I've sunk $30-40k in it. I would have a great time building it, but I can't help but think that there are other cars I could just buy for $40-50k and they wouldn't loose that much value when it is time to sell. My current house only has a two car garage and due to the way it is sitting on the lot, I can't add another garage. I can only have one toy car at this time, or I would just buy another fun car and build this one over the next couple of years. What would svtp do?

If it was me and I always wanted a S351 I would just build a replica unless it would bother that it was a fake one. Throw some pics up of the GTS I have always wanted one of those.

You're already doing it wrong if you are thinking of selling a theoretical project car you don't have.

All depends on what you like. The journey, or the end game? Building a car how you want? Or just owning the car that you want?

And in today's market which is extremely inflated it's hard to tell what car sales will be like. Also the fact of parts supply...I would sit on this idea for a year or so and wait for stuff to go back to what it was.

Oh, and you're not buying a $40-50k car...you are buying a $30-40k car now for $40-50k

It doesn't bother me that it is a replica because I've never wanted to own a car I had to worry about driving the piss out of it.

I already own the 95 mustang.

I usually have a fun car I can drive while I'm building one out. It has been 10 years since I've had a real project car.

The only two cars I want right now have had the prices remain steady. I want either a 2014-2015 Jaguar f type r, or an Aston Martin Vantage v12. I don't see the Vantage loosing a whole lot of value at this point. The F type might lose $10k over the next 5 years.

If you build it, you risk extended lead times for parts and possibly higher parts price.

If you buy it, you risk inflated used car prices BUT you can enjoy it now while the economy works itself out.

If you go Aston Martin, will you have a car loan?

I have thought about that too. Maximum Motorsports is way behind on suspension parts right now. I ordered longtubes at the beginning of may and they keep getting pushed back. Used parts seem to be pretty hard to come by or cost the same as new. I am a little concerned that I may loose interest due to the project sitting for extend periods. I want to order a Holley terminator x when they are back in stock, just in case the EPA cracks down on everything.

No loans. The v12 Vantage value has maintained in the mid 80s, the v8 vantages were mid $30s last year and are now upper $40s. With the low production of the v12, I can't imagine the prices dropping much more.

EXACTLY. If you intend to sell a project car down the line you're throwing money away.

For AM and Jag it never the price of admission which cost money, it’s always the upkeep which is a sunken hole. Had a friend drop his F type due to this. Don’t know anyone close to to me whom owned a Vantage but a DBX (maintenance seems pricy); doesn’t bat an eye lol. Probably because he loves the ways it drive, I’ve driven it: agreed.

Overall, even if it takes longer / costs more get something you’re gonna want OP. Life is too short. So if a jag or AM is your thing… get one and don’t look back.

Just buy an S351, the SN is still down comparatively plus the parts for a rep are tough to find the wheels you can find at times but gauges, seats and brakes are hens teeth.

A nice S351 can still be found in the $20k-$35k range.

I have 3 sets of staggered saleen wheels in the garage. If anyone is looking I might let the rough looking set go.....
