I did not see this posted here yet..

...Would love to buy this guy a drink! In addition to taking out 6 taliban... he probably saved the lives of several intended targets.

The marksman, a Lance Corporal in the Coldstream Guards, apparently hit a suicide bomber’s trigger switch from 930 yards, causing an explosion that killed him and five of his fellow terrorists.

“Lt Col Richard Slack, commanding officer of 9/12 Royal Lancers, said the unnamed sharpshooter prevented a major attack by the Taliban, as a second suicide vest packed with 20kg (44lbs) of explosives was found nearby,” the report states.

The impressive feat occurred in December, but the details only recently have been revealed. There were reportedly several hundred British and Afghan soldiers conducting an operation when they took on as many as 20 insurgents.

And that was with a hip shot. Imagine if this guy actually used a scope! Nice shot either way!

Especially for his first shot on duty

I don't think the 'vest' shot was his first...

The same British sniper also killed a Taliban machine-gunner from an astonishing 1,465 yards. Oh, and it was his first shot on the tour of duty.

I also don't get the previous "hipshot" comment. It was a 860 yd shot. >8 footbal fields.... scope, or no scope it's a badass shot! I suspect 'triggering' the detonation mechanism was probably a bit of luck, but the shot itself was damn fine work. IMHO

just wondering.....

Why would you even have open sights on a rifle like that? The 338LM is really meant to reach out well beyond what our eyes are capable of fixing on.

Where did you read open sights? The L115A3 is an Accuracy International AWSM 338 Lapua most of which are outfitted with S&B 5-25's but some are rocking the older 3-12's still and a few 4-16's here and there. The older rifles have provisions for back up iron sights but they require the removal of the optic to utilize. Nobody in their right Ming would remove a Schmidt to run iron sights and they're damn reliable so they don't fail often. A failure likely would have had him a loaner weapon system or optic from the armory. Basically the sniper utilizing the rifle without a scope is highly unlikely.
