Brake Pedal Goes to the Floor

I don’t remember this issue when I drove it home but I’ve noticed recently that when my 01 gt is idling the brake pedal goes to the floor with little resistance. It’ll still stop no problem it’s just that you have to push it so far. While driving if I were to panic stop it stops no problem. I’ll confirm again but while it’s off if I pump the pedal it will get hard but still has a lot of travel. I’m thinking maybe master cylinder? Any brake experts on here?

my first guess would be master cylinder too, but do the basic check for leaks/diagnostics before firing the parts cannon

How's your steering feel?

Does your hydroboost pump make any noise?

People often forget the hydroboost system routes pressure to the master cylinder first and then to the rack.

I'll agree that your problem seems to point at the master cylinder but you need to check your hydroboost system before throwing parts at it.

Steering is fine, no issues and feels like it should. I’m pretty sure the hydroboost is working as it should.

A telltale sign though, there is missing paint on the body panel directly below where the master cylinder and booster meet. I don’t see any fresh fluid even after pumping the brakes. But there was definitely a leak there at one point. No other signs of a leak anywhere else. All four corners are clean and the lines look fine.

I'd replace the master cylinder then.

I'd replace the master cylinder then. Not a fun job BTW.

I highly recommend taking your hood off. Makes things much easier and it's 5 bolts if you include the ground for the hood blanket.
I’ve never swapped a mc on a mustang but it shouldn’t be too bad right? Fun, I suspected not lol.

^^^ what he said.

2 bolts 2 lines

Bench bleed before installing lines.

03 has bleeder screws also ..

Done right pedal should be hard without bleeding at wheel.

Youtube a video on it.

It's actually very simple.

Perfect thanks for the tips. The chassis has about 195k miles on it so it’s time to swap out the master anyway but I’m confident that’s the issue.
