When can you no longer say you have, just bolt ons. Been hearing that a lot lately or my favorite " factory stock location "..

When fabrication is needed for the part to fit. Is that still considered bolt on?. Is fab'ed the deciding factor.

    Same.

Then again, this would be an easy one to derail. Lol

By definition, a "bolt on" is anything that... bolts on. Meaning, simple mechanical disassembly and reassembly with the new components. By that definition, superchargers, turbo kits, cams, etc are "bolt on" but aren't really regarded as such. Even custom fabricated components are technically "bolt on" if they're held on with bolts, screws, etc.

I always thought of "bolt ons" as a bucket term for the common lower-cost parts that were quick and easy to install; pulleys, throttle body/plenum, intake, exhaust, etc.

It's a subjective term. Anyone that is going to appreciate the work you put into a build isn't going to immediate dismiss it because things were "bolted on."

I always considered "bolt on" the kind of "week 1" mods that everyone does.

    Intake and throttle body
    Exhaust
    Pulley
    Tune

Technically everything in a car "bolts on" but I think turbo kits, headers, cams, fuel systems, etc. Aren't really in the spirit of "bolt on mods."

I mean, is a $30k procharger build with port injection fueling on a C7Z really a "bolt on" build? No welding is involved, LOL!

Its bolt on until you upgrade the supercharger/turbo or anything inside the engine.

To me, bolt ons are simple things like intake, exhaust, shifters, etc. If someone wants to get into the semantics of their twin turbos or Whipple being "bolted on" I just let them go with it. Same thing with the "cam only" LS cars.

I don't know anything about "bolt ons"; all of my cars only have gears and exhaust. ;)

Yeah, I used to feel that bolt-on referred to anything other than opening the motor to upgrade the internals, but a bigger blower or snails really can have a drastic increase in horsepower.

I've always considered bolt-ons to be limited to anything not touching, consuming or otherwise altering the oil/oil system. Running with it this way excludes any power adders, but it seems like every car has its own definition of bolt-ons/FBO.

I've also noticed a lot more people triggered by the term bolt-on and FBO lately, but that really doesn't surprise me.

Bolt-on to me is a term for a light modification. Exhaust, intake, throttle body, etc.

However, there are many people I've seen that consider H/C or a new supercharger/turbo a "bolt-on part". Yes, literally speaking it does bolt on. However, the term "bolt-on" usually refers to basic mods, not drastic modifications such as those listed above.

Bolt ons are items that bolt on to the outside of the engine. Things that don't require the valve covers or oil pan to be removed.
    No internal modifications.

If you want some entertainment, ask the LS guys. Their definition varies depending on whether they win or lose.

But when you do it, constantly refer to an LS as a 350. Drives 'em nuts.

I say my 351ish LX is a FBO little SBF.

Might have ... a little nitrous... the bottle and such bolted in though so it's still just a bolt on car.
