Hello Everyone,

I didn't know where else to put this, so I decided to just start a thread. Although the title indicates it's mine, it's actually my Dad's. But he did say when he passes this one will become mine, just like the 57. So, it will be mine one day.

My Dad had one like this, but traded it in and he regretted that decision. Hmmm sounds familiar. Like me with my 89GT Fox Body.

Anyway, this car is in great shape overall, but the paint had a bunch of hairline cracks in it. So, my Dad had the car painted. He wanted me to do it, but as most of you know, I don't have a place to paint anymore. He shopped around and found a guy who said he could paint the car for $3,500. I told him I thought that was too low, but my Dad felt it was a good price. Yeah, maybe for 1975 LMAO!!!!

Anyway, he got the car painted and he was happy with it. My brother and I thought it was a $3,500 paint job. For those of you who seen my 65 build thread, this paint job is definitely not up to my standard at all.

It is horrible. There is a ton of trash in the paint and I believe the guy had his spray gun pressure set way too high when he sprayed the clear. The clear was sprayed on so hard, it made the orange peel in this paint so bad that the car has a semi dull appearance.

So, what does my brother do? Volunteers me to polish it. Then my Dad says, that sounds like a good idea. Polish it like it's going to be yours one day son. Greaaaaat..... This is going to be a ton of work.

So, I took the 57 to my Dad's house, put it in his garage and brought the 2003 back to my house.

Let the games begin......

I apologize, but this is the only overall shot I took. You can't see anything unless you look at it up close anyway.

Here are the close ups. You can see how dull the reflections of the house looks and you can see all the trash/dirt nibs in the paint.

I asked my Dad to call the guy and ask at what grit I should start at. The guy said 3000. 3000? I'll be here forever trying to get this thing flat. So, I decided to try 2000. It still took me a while, but since I didn't spray the clear I wanted to be cautious and go slow.

Ugh, very bad reflection.

I think I might have a few dents in my head, but this is ridiculous LMAO!!!!

Look at that trash in the roof line. SMH.....

This is in the fender. Just as bad as the hood. You can't even make out that the white thing is my garage door LOL...

So, I got started with wet sanding it by hand using 2000 grit on a sanding block.

All those circles are trash in the paint.

Orange peel was so bad I couldn't get it all out. I was afraid I would bust through the clear. I did go deeper than this picture, but the paint still looks slightly wavy.

Then it was time to start polishing. I used the same process as on my 65. This is with the cutting compound. Stage 1.

Hmm, Misshapen head, but no dents now LOL...

Love the reflections now. Still could be a little better though. When you look at in person it looks like a really good factory paint job.

No this is not an upside down picture. It's the reflection of my garage wall. :p

I did the hood complete from start to finish to see how the paint would come out. I think my Dad will be very pleased with this compared to how it was.

Now, I just need to do the rest of the car LOL. I'll do the trunk next weekend and the sides of the car after that. Should take me 3 or 4 more weekends to complete.

Thanks DSG. Yeah, it was a major PITA to get it to that level. I hand sanded it with 2000. Then I used my DA with 2500 (dry. It's part of that sanding system I purchased for my 65). Then I wet sanded using my DA and 3000. Then finished it with my DA and wet sanding with 8000.

The hand sanding with 2000 is the most difficult. That is where I have to get all the dirt and orange peel out. The rest of the process is not actually cutting, but removing the previous steps sanding scratches.

ROFLMAO!!!! He really can't say that because he's probably getting about $3,500 in free labor and materials with me polishing it for him. And I don't use the cheap stuff LOL.

I say steam cleaned, but I'm really just running hot water through a pressure washer....

we've got a hotsy heated pressure washer at work, might have to give that a try on the truck once I do this other valve cover gasket which is hopefully the rest of my automatic anti-corrosion system (ie oil leaks) ive got going on

The Hotsy units work great for engine cleaning. I had one that was in a shop I rented years ago and loved it but they're $5k+ to buy and thats a lot of money to clean my engines once a year.

I never thought about hooking my pressure washer up to the hot water, might have to give that a shot.

Damn son, that looks great! When can I get one done?

Thank you brother!!!

ROFLMAO!!!! I'm not even finished with this one Shawn. I know I did this in 2022, but I feel even more wore out after doing this now and I only did the hood. Thank God this car is small and there's no top LOL.

I was sitting on the couch last night and tried to get up to go get a snack. My back and legs were like "where the hell do you think your going?" I was like "you're right, I don't need a snack that bad" LMAO!!!

Hello Everyone,

Well it's been slow going with my Dad's Thunderbird. Since I have to do the cutting outside, the weather has not been cooperating here. We have had very high winds lately and I basically live in a dust bowl. So, when it's windy it's basically like raining sand. I cannot sand the car properly in those conditions.

I'm basically wet sanding the car by hand with 1500 grit now to get the clear coat a little flatter (I'll probably go back over the hood one more time and re-polish it). Once that's done then I can use my orbital sander to work out the paint from there.

I'm almost done with 1500 grit by hand. I only need to do half of the passenger fender and the passenger door. I'm hoping to get those done this week.

This is my Dad's daily driver. So, I'm not polishing the lower portion of the car due to rock chips and road debris. Most will not notice the difference due to how the light reflects off the bottom of the car anyway.

Here's where I'm at now.

You can see the shine on the door indicating it has not been wet sanded yet.
20250323_173008_resized.jpg

I went ahead and wet sanded my Dad's headlights. I'll get those polished out as well.

This is the halfway point on the passenger fender. Just a reminder of how bad the orange peel is on this car. Sanding by hand sucks. Can't wait to get into the machine phase of this project.
