after porting my Boss intake and seeing the results I started thinking about porting my heads , but its a major PITA to pull the heads on these cars so I wasnt about to do it unless I was already pulling the motor.

thought about it some more and decided that rather than sit around and wait for my motor to #8 or munch a rod I would take matters into my own hands and just port the heads on the damn car! I pulled the intake and had a look at the ports... I saw some things I thought I could improve on , but I also wanted to see how the Boss ports matched up to the heads...but how could I check? I compared the Boss ports up against the stocker and they are pretty much identical in the opening , so I figured since I dont need my stocker I would just cut the flange off it and bolt it to the head and see how it matches up. well it matches up very well with only a slight mismatch at the top of the ports on either side of the injector.

undetered by the nice port match I still felt as there was room for improvement and I was gonna get it. So I broke out the 6" carbides, shop vac and cotton balls...lined the valves with 6 cotton balls per side and went to work. I corrected the slight mismatch and took the bluntness out of the runner divider. I trimmed and thinned the bump right in front of the valve guides and I smoothed and blended as far into the bowls as I could reach.

bolted the intake back on and went to the track next day iirc. here are the results. keep in mind the air was 400' better on the ported timeslip then it was on the unported...

corrected for d/a the car shows .1sec and just under 1mph gained...not bad considering the exhaust is untouched and the intake bowls are basically untouched also.

like Joe Pesci said in Casino "because I'm stupid like that" lol

I figure its matter of time before the motor comes out , but I just couldnt wait. once I start thinking I can get more power I get all giddy like a kid.

I always wondered why this isnt attempted more. I mean if a person stuffed the ports around the valves, I dont see the harm. Granted you have to make sure its clean once you are done.

I had my intake off a couple weeks ago going to the CJ and I took some measurement...
Boss Head Intake Side.
2.22 x 1.23 or 56.43mm x 31.46mm…
See how the stock intake side measures?
Kinda curious what the difference is.
Now the factory boss intake measured out to be 55.04mm x 32mm…
My final CJ intake 57.3mm x 32.28mm on about an average

exactly what I was thinking when I read the OP, with my luck, something would get past the cotton balls.

Glad it worked out for you though, OP. Not bad for not costing you anything. Plus, I enjoy doing little projects like this.

damn that makes my work look like a hack job...I didn't bother with sanding rolls/flap wheels because it created way too much dust/grit to risk getting into the cylinders. when the heads come off I will redo them properly.

Looks like CNC work to me.
