I'm down in the Treasure Coast area, a little more than an hour south of Melbourne, which is a nice small city. I really like Melbourne- very nice place. It's not a city in the truest sense of the word, but it's not Smallville either. Downtown is super nice, great beaches, lots of much smaller towns surrounding the area. Cape Canaveral is around the corner so you get a front row seat to every rocket launch- very cool. Don't worry about snakes/gators. I've been here 40 years, always lived on/near water- lakes, canals- never actually seen a cottonmouth or gator in any of them although I know they are there. Weather is generally nice too- warm weather six months a year, cooler temps/lower humidity the rest, very nice balance. CentFla seems to get hit more frequently w/tornadoes than the rest of the state, usually in winter/spring- Jan-May. Orlando area is a mere 1.5 hrs away max, West Palm Beach is probably 1.5 hrs south. Moroso race track is located in WPB, Daytona is the next county north and there are some smaller tracks up in that area, I believe Deland. Bottom line- you could definitely pick worse areas of FL to live in. I would have no issues moving there from my area. Good luck.
