Consider this, though. The '15 Z06 ran a 1:38.60 hot lap when Motor Trend had it in the 2015 BDC competition. I know people will say, "but that car wasn't making full power," but that's the particular point here. The much less powerful '16 GT350R laid down 1:36.11. That's 2.49 seconds faster. I think it's fairly safe to say that, even though the Z06 wasn't making full power on its run, it was probably still making in the neighborhood of GT350R power and is 100+ lbs lighter. Now, you could reasonably argue to look at the Grand Sport, instead. That car ran 1:35.62 on its BDC hot lap. It's also +/-100 lbs lighter than a Z06 w/ Z07 package and over 200 lbs lighter than the GT350R. Some say the GS is actually a better balanced car because it's not overpowering its chassis and can make better use of the power available. Anyway, I said all that to say this. Add plenty of power and appropriate suspension tweaks, and there's really no reason that the GT500 couldn't be in the ballpark of the ZR1, which weighs the same as the Z06. Also, we have yet to see performance numbers on the ZR1, and Chevy is on record saying the new ZR1 is basically a very track capable GT car, not a streetable track car. It's going to be bonkers on track, but not balls-to-the-wall crazy. And there might very well be an R/KR variant of the new GT500 still looming.
