If I go into Canada right now, will I need a passport to get back into the US? Everyone is telling me "yes", but I just found this on-line...

As of Dec 21, 2007, passport requirements have been once again delayed meaning that US citizens arriving in Canada by land or water do not need a passport until at least summer 2009...

So anyone with first-hand experience???

I Bolded the current.
Cliffs:

U.S. citizens need to present either (a) a passport, passport card (available in spring 2008), or WHTI-compliant document; or (b) a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.

LATER:
As early as June 1, 2009, the U.S. government will implement the full requirements of the land and sea phase of WHTI. The proposed rules require most U.S. citizens entering the United States at sea or land ports of entry to have a passport, passport card, or WHTI-compliant document.

As a Canadian I have entered into the US last week with only my drivers license. The US customs agent advised me that between now and next summer I must show some ID with me which proves citizenship and place of birth such as a passport or birth certificate.

I doubt that if you are born in the US and pull up with your valid drivers license will have any problems.

I was just there last week. You do not need a passport if you travel by land or sea. All you need is a picture ID (driver's license) and proof of citizenship (I used a birth certificate). The Canadians at the border were much more pleasant to deal with than the Americans letting us back into the country.

Example: I bought a used FR500 m58 exhaust from a SVTP member (thanks Chad) and the border guard asked why I drove all the way to Canada to pick up an exhaust. I replied that it was discontinued. He said "Discontinued how?" I said that it is no longer manufactured. Does anyone else know another meaning to `discontinued`???? I did not understand any other reason to ask this question unless he was simply trying to back me into a corner so I confess all my transgressions that I commited and decided to bring back while I was in Canada for 8 hours. Kind of got a kick out of it. I'm glad someone is trying to watch our borders closely.

On the way in to Canada they asked why drive so far to get an exhaust. I told the guard and he said Ok, asked me some more detailed questions, but did not make me feel like I the subject of a psychological experiment in law enforcement and I was on my way. Different approach in my opinion. I wonder which one works better?

Story aside, and to reiterate: No passport needed for land or sea travel, just need proof of citizenship and a picture ID

Interesting... So a driver's license by itself isn't good enough.

The reason I'm asking is because I'm going to be in Detroit next weekend for the NCAA games, and we were thinking about heading over to the Windsor Casino. I guess we aren't going anywhere without a birth certificate!

Thanks everyone for the responses.

You do not necessarily need a Birth Certificate. Any other piece of government ID will be fine, it does not need your picture. You might be able to enter with your Drivers license only, but then you are getting a break from the border guard.

I do a lot of traveling ... not much to canuksville tho. but quite frankly in today's world I would not travel ANYWHERE without a passport. Europeans are amazed that we don't all have passports already.

it is cheap enough to get one, they are good for 10 years, and it is better to have them and not need them than need it and not have it.

Driver's license and a birth certificate if you don't have a passport. I go there all the time since you only have to be 19 to go to the bars. Them Canadians, there so friggin nice eh?

Yup. And you can't go somewhere on a whim.
