last month i went with a very large wrangler group up to the mountains in San Berdoo no permit needed. at Cleghorn trail. we even chatted with a ranger on the way up who told us about some closed areas. my first time wheeling in our wrangler and it was a beginner trail. talk about pucker factor while flexing and 3 wheeling while driving uphill on a narrow trail. i was like, "this is beginner?! are you serious?!" lol. i had the only JL in the group and they were really impressed how it did "bone stock" (only upgrade is 33s, from 31.5"). i was in the market for a TJ. always wanted one. i started aiming for LJs. they are "rare" and have stupid high resale value. almost pulled the trigger on a looow mileage clean one at $17k. had a mechanic inspect it and he came back with a laundry list of repairs and maintenance that was needed. said it was leaking from everywhere it could possibly leak from. possibly some oil in the coolant too. so afterlooking at about $10k in repairs/maint on a bone stock LJ, not even including any upgrades, i started looking at newer ones. definitely wanted one post 2012 with the newer engine. then i was almost at the cost of a brand new one. after testing driving some 2017 JKs and a 2018 JL my wife said, "we're getting the JL" lol. plus they were having big memorial day sales where the JLs were actually less than the 2018 JKs they still had in stock. quite the upgrade in performance and civility. the new 8spd auto is incredilble. plus with the 200lb or so weight drop, it moves out, and gets decent mpg. and unlike the jeeps of old, a basic, starter base model wrangler will wheel right out the box, as i found out. only thing i wish i could have got was Sting Gray but at the price point i got mine for and the fact that it had the anti-slip package on it (D44 and LSD) which is rare, i couldnt complain. in fact the dealer had an Ocean Blue without the anti-slip package for more $ than mine with it. it seems they were charging a premium for certain colors. black, white, silver and gray were the giveaway colors. my buddy has a TJ and he just put the Banks turbo kit on it. the thing moves out like a bat out of hell! but it feels like an out of control golf cart lol. while i still like the TJs and have much respect for them they really dont compare to the latest and greatest. the wheelbase alone makes a tremendous difference. ive seen many hardcore jeepers state they would never go back to a 2 door again. the day i went wheeling there were two 2 doors there, a TJ Rubi and a JK Rubi, both mildly modded. both had trouble getting over obstacles that my stock JLU just climbed right over like a billy goat. since i have 3 kids, the 4 door was the only solution. and the mrs. said no way to a manual. and i love the 8sp auto. its awesome. seen quite a few threads with issues on the new 6 speed. the downside is the aftermarket has been soooo slow to come out with anything for them. and the stuff that has come out, is $$. likely will come down eventually.
