I'm researching new tires for my 99 Cobra. I have a new set of AFS Cobra R 17x9 / 17x10.5 wheels I want to get tires for. These will be used for the street only. I don't drive in the rain and would like a balance between traction and higher treadwear (a little more traction than treadwear is fine).

What size tires would you recommend? Has anyone confirmed 315/35/17 NT555 will fit with an IRS equiped Cobra?

Thanks for the post djtech.

You should be able to make the 315's work with some fender modifications. Did you gain any track width in the rear? Also, what is the offset on the rear wheels?

Hey Matt, thanks for the reply. When you asked about the track width, are you refering to the stock tires versus 315/35's I want to get for the 17x10.5's?

Here are the 17x10.5 wheel specs:

wheels are +27mm offset with 6.63-inch backspacing

Right now I'm running 17x8 with stock sized 245-45 17 tires.

I had a set of 18's I ran with 295/35 on a set of AFS 18x10.5's that fit. It was close to the irs bolt but never hit. Those 18x10.5's had these dimensions:

wheels are +27mm offset with 6.9 backspacing

Based on the vendor specs the proxes I ran had a width of 11.7" and the nitto 315 35 17 is 12.56" width

The nitto 285/40 17 is 11.38" width (again vendor specs)

The backspace difference between the 17x10.5 and 18x10.5 AFS wheels is .27"

Can you help me calculate the safest yet widest 17 to fit on the back? I'd rather not have the tire past the fender either

Thank you for the additional information and your continued patience. I was out of the office yesterday.

Size 315/35-17 is going to be a pretty tight fit but they should work if you have a low profile IRS bolt or you flip it over. The tire will be flush with the fender so you may have to make some slight fender mods and I stress MAY.

If you have a Discount Tire in your area I suggest contacting them for a test fit.

I have a 2003 cobra with fr500 17x10.5s on the back, from american muscle. Anyhow I have 315/35/17s nittos on the back and they do not hit the IRS bolt, close though.
