I think you will be fine running that weight and using RP oil. I think it all comes down to what brand everyone prefers. You cant go wrong with Amsoil, RP, or Mobil 1. Im stationed over at Andrews AFB, MD. Its good to see some other people from the same area on here.

They don't know what oil they used? That is really weird for a Cobra owner. It is fine to switch back and forth as long as the oil is a good well know syn that is API rated. I switch between Mobil 1 0w-40 and BMW German Castrol 5w-30. I have always had good reports from Blackstone labs (used oil analysis).

Oil has always been a topic that amazes me in the 03-04 Cobra world. So many people look so far into it, and waste so much money.

If my '04 Cobra with 113,000 miles, has used Motorcraft oil and Filter it's entire life, and makes over 600rwhp...I just don't see what other oils could be worth double, triple, or quadruple the price? It is run with 5w-30 fwiw.

Never liked Royal Purp....Amsoil and Castrol is what I run in my Cobra. Full synthetic with a MotorCraft Filter.

Why do people choose to run a Quality oil yet cheap out on the oil filter? The Oil filter is just as important if not more so then the oil its self. I'm not saying the Motorcraft filter is bad. But there is better choices out there. I'm glad nobody has mentioned Fram yet. There is only one Fram that is apparently good but I can't remember it off the top of my head.

Are there any negative affects of changing from one synthetic to another at this stage in the cars life. The previous owner doesnt know/remember what oil was used :nonono: Any suggestions would be helpful. Im going with RP HPS 5W-30

You can switch from a conventional oil to a synthetic and switch back at any time. Just don't make a habit of always switching brands.

Switching between brands of oil every other oil change is not considered a best practice. Eventually you could have some additive conflict and end up with some goo in your engine.

This is mostly likely where the myth that once you switch you can't ever go back came from.

My 113K mile Cobra makes 632/586 on 93 Pump....and it's run on good ole Motorcraft Oil and Filter. The engine is as quiet as any out there, and the oil has looked the same for years. Never sent for analysis, as I really don't care.

most likely because the Motorcraft filter has never failed them and have never seen what a top tier filter can do.

Switching between brands of oil every other oil change is not considered a best practice. Eventually you could have some additive conflict and end up with some goo in your engine.

I tried different lubricants back to back, but always ended up with goo in my hand. Are you sure that staying with only one lubricant will solve my goo problem? :lol1:

I bet if you did back to back dyno runs, one with Motorcraft, the other with a top tier true synthetic....

Your dyno numbers would increase by 1 to 2 percent.

My car came with a book of receipts for oil changes and a select few are actually the same. looks like it varies between 5w-20 and 30... I just use Mobil1 5w-20 and a Motorcraft filter, just like the book calls for, and never had any issues. Car's all stock and I don't beat the dogs off of of it, so never any problems here. Oil comes out as clean as it went in.

ive been using basic castrol gtx and stp oil treatment...but im still stock...

if i was using car for other reasons i would run a better oil..

i have always replaced my oil after over heating...

the extra heat added from more power/abuse, is where i think the other oils are needed

I'm not all that worried about 1-2% increase in power.

I stick with what works, and for me, that has been Motorcraft 5-30 in every Modular I have owned, built, and raced.

I would never claim that Motorcraft is "better" than a Top Tier Synthetic, but I do doubt how much more benefit that Top Tier oil would provide to my engines.

I have been blessed with not having any issues with my Modular engines since 1999. I am also blessed with a very healthy 113,000 mile factory built 4V that makes over 600rwhp, soon to be over 700rwhp. Hopefully you can see my point.
