7.3L Godzilla V8 Oil Changes Made Simpler | $12 Part from Apple Ford

If you’re anything like me, you look forward to changing the oil in your rig. It should be a simple, yet fulfilling, task that does good for both your engine and your soul. However, the last thing you want is for this simple mechanical endeavor to turn into to a PITA. Drain plugs should be positioned so you don’t get an involuntary chassis oiling, the oil filter shouldn’t be located in a location only 82-pound Korean gymnast can reach, and the oil fill should be able to accept a simple funnel without spilling half-a-gallon of oil down the block. From the factory the 7.3L Godzilla V8 has two out of the three, so I decided to make it a perfect 3-for-3. Set in Apple Ford of White Bear Lake (formerly Tousley Ford for you old-timers).

You long time members of SVTP are familiar with @FORDSVTPARTS, but for the newbs – you need to get to know Steve. He is our resident Ford Parts guru. If you need some Ford OEM parts, he’s the man to see. Just so happens I had to call him up after doing the first oil change on my Tremor F-350. The 90-degree angle of the oil-fill hole in the valve cover mixed with the hose routed around it made for a difficult (and potentially messy) task for pouring in the necessary 2-gallons of oil. I knew there had to be a better way.

My member berries told me that certain Ford models often come with a little extension screwed onto the valve cover to kick the oil fill location out to a more accessible location. He helped me find one that would fit perfectly on the Godzilla valve cover and for ~$12 I was about to have less frustrating oil changes. Ford Part Number HL3Z-6763-B, which I believe is actually for a Coyote or EcoBoost F-150, makes the oil fill location about level and accepts the factory 7.3L oil fill cap. My favorite funnel now sits in there nicely, I have no spills, and I didn’t have to buy some specialized funnel I’d have to store just to do oil changes on one vehicle. Check it out:

I can’t say enough good about Steve and the crew over at Apple Ford. They’ve been long time supporters of SVTP, have great deals on Ford blue-box parts, and always deliver top-notch service. If you need Ford parts shot @FORDSVTPARTS a PM.

Here's the part number you need.

Before the install the oil fill was at an odd angle.

This is much better. I love finding little add-ons like this.
